What does my ex want? Could a platonic relationship work?

My ex texted me recently a message apparently meant for someone else. I didn't have the number saved as he has changed his SIM, so it came up as a new number. He thought I was joking that I didn't know who it was. He kept calling me by my nickname and said "do you remember who used to call you that?"

He said he moved far away during lockdown. He said I was his last girlfriend as he had to move and sort out his life. But we stopped dating in the beginning of 2019.

He said he can't believe he's talking to me and said he would like to talk again the next day or sometime soon if I would like to. He also said it's weird that we were talking because he was thinking about me that day and he doesn't talk to anyone from London anymore. We chatted for about 2 hours.

Could he just need someone to talk to? Could it work as friends?

He said he will always speak to me. Not sure what he means by that.
