My ex boyfriend and i chat like nothing happened after the break up, although we chat less now. do you think it's good to still communicate with him or just cut contact with him? I don't know which one would work to take him back. We still love each other but his situation is kinda rough rn and he doesn't want me to get caught up in it and hurt me in his bad time.

Keeping in contact keeps you from moving on. Now if that’s what you want fine. But if you truly want to move on cut contact. Because talking to him increases the chances of you getting back together. Most of the time if people break up it’s for a reason and getting back together can possibly waste both peoples time or ruin your life. But I’m saying this with little context. I don’t know the situation why y’all broke up and what you want. Do what you want but I personally haven’t stayed friends with an ex. I talked to one of my exes one time years ago and we ended up getting back together honestly it lasted a week. So unless you want him cut contact.

Well, first, if you want to get back with him, let him know. Don't pretend it's just casual chatting when you are hoping for more because he can't guess you want more out of this. After enough time, if you don't show you want more than just chatting, the other person will just assume you just want to chat and nothing more, especially if you don't actively do anything to do more than just chatting.

Let him know you are interested, tell him the truth if you want a chance to get a true, real answer and, if you get a negative answer or an evasive one, I'd say you're better off moving on instead of chasing something that does not want to come to you and that will make you use up a lot of your time and energy.
