Misleading signals with my ex. Any thoughts?

My ex broke up with me 5 months ago (in march). And we went full no contact for 2 months (may and June). But in July we met up again because I reached out to him and he asked me to hang out. Since then we are having a casual relationship and talking kinda regularly. I know he likes another girl but she already rejected him before we met up again. Why does he still want to hang out and talk to me? It's not like he doesn't have any other girls that want to be with him. He's very clear about not wanting to be in a relationship with anyone yet sometimes he tells me weird things like everytime I'm with him he doesn't want to leave nor stay, when I gave him a present for his birthday he said he thought "I love you", he told me I give him a reason to live, and that he forgets about everything when he's with me and how it seems like we never broke up in those moments, he also said he holds on to the past, and he tells me all the time how lucky is going to be the next guy I'll be with. I don't let these things get into my head but I find them kind of weird. Any thoughts on the matter?

Because you are a backup. When he got rejected he goes back to you because you allow it. Exes should stay in the past unless you are serious about getting back together and making things work. He does not sound like he is. It is fine if you can become friends and be amicable but don't be fooled... right now you are a backup when all else fails. He tells you what you want to hear. That is all he is doing. That will keep you around and has obviously worked.
