Do you have any keepsake from your past relationships?

I have a very big beautiful painting of me and my ex, where he is leaning his head on my shoulder and has his eyes closed and I am looking at the camera with a confident look.  That was given to me as a New Year Gift by my relatives, they paid a real painter and It’s painted according to the real photo we had, which was very romantic.  Even though our relationship ended, that painting stays at a very prominent place of our house.  My ex had often used that painting as his cover photo too.  It was a beautiful painting. Kind of a keepsake of my very special love story.

I have her handkerchief, a pair of t-shirts and a pair of trackpants that she gifted me when we last met. It was a goodbye gift. I do have a few other things that have sentimental value, although not given by her. We had won some prizes together after working very hard. We split the money in half. I still have that envelope with the notes from that day. I never spent that money, and probably won't ever. There are a lot of other things that are very specific to her but not materialistic. Things like my phone password. We shared the same birthdate. She was exactly a year younger. My password is still set to that date. My wallpaper. It's something she had set because I had some funny abstract art as my wallpaper and she didn't like it. She had set one on my phone. My parents liked it too. Since then I haven't changed it.

It's been almost 2 years since we separated and almost a year with no conversation at all. But I still remember everything and hold all these things very dear to me

There were some photos I used to have of an ex as well as sketches and paintings I made of her. I had a custom to throw such things away after heartbreaks to help me move on.

Yet with her, I couldn't get myself to do it. We were engaged to be married. I had built hopes and dreams and even concrete goals for us to be married, to grow old together.

So I just buried them deep in a closet in my apartment, even piling things on top and making it as inconvenient as possible to reach them, as my way to help me recover and move on but without throwing them away.

Then when I proposed to marry my wife, I dug up those old photos and sketches and paintings in the process of moving to our new house. I ended up throwing them away then and there. I think that was my final act of moving on.

mine is lame lol I just had a tangerine I wrote his name on, and was supposed to give to him when we finally met up, and I kept it on my dresser as it eventually dried out. It was harder than a ping pong ball after our break up, and I’m sure it was just skin left. I could’ve left it, but I decided to throw it out and liberate myself even more from the pain he had caused me. I had two tangerines when I spoke with him that day, and he asked for one jokingly, so I told him I’d have one and give him his half when we saw each other. Never happened 😧😮😆

Yeah I have some teddies in the basement from several of my exes.

I have a "wok" I got from an ex. It wasn't a good relationship at all, but I'm too pragmatic to throw it out. It's a good one.

I have an ukulele an ex gave me, because I wanted to learn how to play it.

And I have a few other things I bet.

I have pictures of all my relationships, and still have many of the gifts from those relationships. I don't get rid of things just because a relationship ends.

Petra gave me a statue of Pepe le Pew and Penelope one Christmas. It is painted, cast metal, mounted on a quartz slab, over 4" tall and probably 5" long. There is a hand painted stripe of pure gold down Pepe's back. He's holding Penelope in his arms, leaning her back, gazing into her eyes and she's gazing back.
I think she paid a lot for it back then.

It sits on the chest of drawers I use as a night stand next to my side of the bed.

My wife has never asked me about it that I can recall.

That is very sweet! I used to have but took them stupidly when I was stationed overseas and left it behind when I evacuated.

Question, once you are in a new relationship, what if your partner isn’t OK with you having your painting. Are you going to hide it, store it away, or give back to your relatives?

I have a folder on my harddrive with the digital stuff, and I haven't thrown away any of the gifts. She gave me gifts on my birthdays that I genuinely like, such as a hat from my favorite video game or an air cleaner. Those gifts I don't consider keepsakes though, the real physical keepsake I do have is a valentines rose that we planted in the garden. I don't want to get rid of the rose just because the relationship is over.

Absolutely, I have pictures of me and my ex both from picture frames and on my phone still. I also have past messages that we've shared and past Valentine's day cards. So I've saved a lot of stuff from our relationship. What can I say, I found it too hard to part with as i'm trying to move on from our breakup.

I grew up 14 days away from homelessness. I never owned anything i couldnt carry. Whats the point if I had to leave it behind? Luckily I was only actually homeless for a few weeks. I am now pretty successful. I own more than one home. A car. A computer. Nothing else. To this day if I can't carry it, I don't own it. All this can go away in 14 days or one missed check. I have every single card I was ever given. Every love letter, and nothing but little keepsakes from loved ones and friends.
