Why do men chase you for sooo long and when they got you fuck it all up?

I had a guy I was dating he chased me for around 8 years.. I was in a relationship for half of it but he literally never gave up untill when I was single in the end I thought you know what let’s just see. I fell for him hard because he literally was showering me with all the things I thought I needed at the time. He ended up going to jail I had no clue and thought he had ghosted me for over a month and to be fair it was shit but I was willing to get over it until a month later he got one of his friends to contact me to let me know what had happened to me and he wanted my address so he could send me a letter.

I kept in contact throughout his time which and helped him when I could coz I just simply cared for him and he supported me when he was out so I just thought that was the least I could do.

Moving forward, he came out after 5 or so months and we tried to rekindle what we had but he just literally was being weird for a while and I couldn’t understand it atall. In the end I cut all ties with him because it was just coming across like he was just tryna play mind games with me and I just couldn’t trust him at all in the end. A year later and he still keeps popping up, calling me on unknown and all sorts because he knows I won’t answer his calls.

I’m just trying to understand why a guy would chase me for that long and then start acting weird after the fact. Or at this point am I just the problem and from the beginning he always thought I was easy so he just kept coming back.
