Ex boyfriend never once said sorry?

So we dated for over a year, he was a drunk/drug addict who at the start said he wanted to do better. Throughout our relationship he hurt me countless times and it was most often associated with his drinking. He ended up ghosting me and recently contacted me months later. First he said it’s because he thought I did something and then after said because he was stressed. In the months since, he’s been having sex with his ex and told me how good he makes her feel. Then he tells me how miserable our relationship was how we always fought. Thing is, we almost always fought when he drank. So I vented and told him all the incidents and how not once did he ever say sorry for all the pain he caused me. And go figure he still didn’t even say sorry. I guess now I’m hurt because of what he said, I did so much for him, and he’s saying he was unhappy. His drinking/drug use actually got worse since the breakup. All this time I was thinking he was bettering himself and I was missing him.
Is there a reason why he can’t say sorry?
