Date Yourself: The Cure for Everything

I will always love you
You are a beautiful person
You mean so much to me

These are the words we love

A hand on your face
Or stroking your hair
Arms holding you

These are the touches we crave

Rubbing your back
Ordering your favorite dinner
Surprise! I washed your dishes

These are services we value

A new coat in winter
A fragrance in spring
A smile on a sad day

These are the gifts we cherish

But, alas, Love doesn't always go our way. We go through a slump. We don't want to risk our hearts. We don't feel like putting forth the effort. We say "Love sucks."

Or, sometimes we're with someone but that person we are with doesn't live up to our expectations. They don't touch, speak, serve, or give the way we want them to.

One time, when I was going through a depression, after the death of someone I loved, I convinced myself that I didn't even want a significant other ever again. That it just wasn't worth trying. And, a wise woman -- a friend -- told me two simple words.

"Date yourself."

I thought it sounded crazy but I saw that she had a point. No one should go without love. So, I decided to give it a try. I had butterflies in my stomach and even felt a little nervous about asking myself out on a date.

It wasn't easy to ask myself out at all. An ugly moment of truth came. I had to face facts, like do I even want to date myself? Would I date myself? No wonder my love life was non-existent. I'm miserable. I don't take care of myself. I don't think I have any interests that would make for a date.

But, I asked out anyway, in spite of my depressed mood and in spite of the fact that I didn't look my best, and in spite of the fact I wasn't a person I wanted to be around. I decided to ask myself out anyway, because that, I told myself, that is love.

And, just this simple question ("Hey do you want to go out with me?" ) made me get a manicure, get a haircut, buy a nice shirt, clean my messy car. This simple gesture of love made me go for a walk around a lake that day and watch the sunlight play on the water. The gesture of love took me to my favorite restaurant. This gesture of love made me buy beautiful flowers and give them to myself.
