Online on Whatsapp after going to bed? Is he actually online?

My boyfriend and I are long distance (over 2 years together). We use Whatsapp to stay in touch when we're not physically together. Over the few days I've noticed that we'll be texting a bit and it will say he's online but there's no blue ticks. As if he's perhaps talking to someone else. He eventually does read the message and the ticks turn blue, then he'll reply at some point. We'd had issues with his ex a while back so I'm hoping it has nothing to do with her. And that maybe he's just not actually in our chat window when this happens. The first time this happened he was out for dinner with coworkers, I just found it odd that he was showing as online but not reading the messages as this hasn't happened before. Usually when he's online we're chatting back and forth no problem.

Today the same thing was happening and when I asked what he was doing he said he was reading a book. Eventually I told him I'd get back to work and he responded a minute later saying he was going to bed. But when I logged into Whatsapp after work he was showing as online. This would be around 3am his time and he's still showing as online now, around 5am his time. He is supposed to be working tomorrow SO I'm thinking that maybe he's fallen asleep and not came out of Whatsapp or something similar, otherwise he will be totally zombified. And he's a man who needs at least 9 hours sleep or he's like a bear with a sore head.

Is there any other reason it would show a person as being online if they're not? Perhaps some glitchy internet thing? Thanks.

Now it says he was last seen at (5pm his time). So I'm not sure what's going on.

I casually mentioned it when we were chatting today and he said it wasn't him. I was still getting the 2 grey ticks for a while before they turned blue with him online so I'm a bit hmm. But when he said goodnight it didn't show him as online after. BUT I checked FB messenger and it says he was online 5 hours ago, 3am his time. Ugh.

If the app is running, then he's automatically showing as on line. He might be asleep.

That DOESN'T mean he is actually using it!!

I used to get bawled out by someone for leaving them on READ. It was only because my tablet was running KIK, when I might have been asleep. I wasn't actually using it, but because it was running, it marked incoming messages as READ.

Showing as being on line means nothing more than that.

Hmm that's what I was wondering but now it's saying last seen as if he's just logged off? Weird.

I wonder if mine shows that kind of thing because I don't physically login I just click on the app and that's me ready to chat.

Also, if the ticks are not blue, he may have left another app showing on the screen. I'm also not sure what happens when a lock screen kicks in. Difficult to see when the lock is on!!

If I leave my tablet on all night with some apps running, it will kill a battery that was only 50%.

Hmm, maybe he was on Whatsapp on his iPad? Rather than his mobile? And his iPad has run out of battery. That might be it?

So many variables! Yeah it's not as if he's reading it and not replying, just no blue ticks but he's showing as online. Hopefully it's just an app running while he's fast asleep...

I'm on my PC at the moment. I KNOW I have at least three apps running on my tab. Not social media, I hasten to add.

He's always telling me I'm on FB too much. When he does the same. And yes the messenger thing drives me nuts too.

We're both quite introverted anyway. Sometimes we can chat for ages and other times one or both of us don't have much to say.

Thanks, it's good to get some reassurance. And I know my Skype keeps me signed in when I've been using email, he questioned me about that once (he thought I was chatting to someone, I wasn't, it just automatically signed me in and I can't get it to stop).

That's what I'm wondering but he's not online now! As if he's been chatting and logged off. At 5am :(

If he left it running, maybe out of battery.

@dogbert444 A possibility, but he uses his phone's alarm to wake him up. So he'd usually charge it if the battery was draining.

Unless he woke up and turned it off. I am awake and out of bed at 3am at least one a week. I turn my tab off. I might put it on charge. I might reply to a message from somewhere round the world. So many reasons why he could have logged off at 5am.

. My partner and have to live apart for work reasons, but leave WhatsApp on at night. It appears we are sleeping side by side. We can hear each other breathing, it is comforting. The app has only lasted all night once, it usually disconnects after about five hours

Assuming if you are between 36-45 you are mature enough to understand its just "whatsapp". You should call him and ask otherwise you will over think and be paranoid over the whatsapp thing.

I would never have worried about this if there hadn't been the drama with the crazy ex before. I'll see if he mentions anything. I had messaged him asking if he was online (because I was surprised) so I'll see if he says he was.

She was an ex for a reason. I believe your relationship is on the initial stage and not strong as yet.

Hmm, yeah because she wouldn't leave her husband, so he decided to find someone else. But they stayed "friends".
