Why do guys complain about "basic" girls but actually seem to prefer them anyway?

My cousin was complaining about 6 months ago about how all the girls he matches with on Tinder tend to be very... bland. He said they all have really generic profiles, with things like "Live. Laugh. Love" or "Family, friends, pizza, and Insta are my life." He says these girls were as boring on dates as they are in their profiles, and wished he could find a girl with a "unique" personality, intelligence, and quirky interests. I introduced him to a beautiful, kind friend of mine who has all of those qualities - environmental science background, published poet, avid reader, great cook. But he decided he didn't want to see her again. Last week he brought a new girl to our family gathering, and she was basically everything he said he hated - she kept playing with Instagram, taking photos of my grandma's food and almost constant selfies with my cousin, and her primary hobbies appeared to be watching Netflix and shopping. Soooo... why do guys complain about girls like this, yet seem to actually prefer them when it comes down to it?
