How expensive is it? Is it one of the most expensive in town? Or just a decent independent restaurant (not a cheap chain like Applebee’s etc.)? Maybe to her it’s a perfectly ordinary restaurant. Here in Seattle if I invited a woman to dinner I would expect to spend between $125 and $200. Entrees are over $20 everywhere, then there’s salad, dessert, wine, tax, and tip. At one of the top restaurants it would be $250.

Never go to dinner for the first date. Invite her for a drink and if it goes well then ask “Do you want to get dinner?” I met my wife for coffee which turned into a long lunch.

Pappadeux

Pappadeaux is a little bit overpriced in my opinion but I wouldn't consider it a particularly expensive restaurant. I lived in Dallas for a long while and went to Pappadeaux on occasion. There are many Dallas restaurants much more expensive than Pappadeaux. The Mansion on Turtle Creek is probably the most famous but there are several others where an entree can easily run $35 or more.

I'm getting the idea that your idea of an expensive restaurant and her idea of an expensive restaurant are rather different. If Pappadeaux is over your budget then you shouldn't have asked her where she wanted to go. What were you expecting her to say? The Olive Garden?

Repeating my first point -- never plan dinner for the first date. That's doubly true if dining out is a strain on your budget.

Be careful. I have had a few very bad experiences with this type of thing. One she ordered a ton of expensive stuff. Then at the end of the date she said "I love dates. I get free food and get to have fun and I'm not looking for anything but free stuff." She then posted on a few social media sites that she was looking for a good man for a good relationship and ended up doing the same thing to three other guys before we found out she had been sleeping with my friends husband the whole time.

Not a good sign. Be very on guard. I'd say two strikes (not three), in close succession, and she's out. Once you're both seated and she starts ordering, there's nothing you can do, and that is a very uncomfortable position to be in. When I'm in a place like that, I let the man lead if it was his invite or appeared to be a spontaneous unanimous idea. If there's any doubt, I will not order frivolously. But don't count on that here. I'd get out of this situation, and like @torken suggested, do a simpler date instead. It will prove whether her interest is in you, or the food.

Ask her if she has money to pay for it. Especially when you may not. Ask her how this is going to be resolved. With you going half or what. Now is the time. Don't agree to something you cannot pay or handle. First of all, this SOMEBODY you met ONLINE. You don't know her and she's trying to get you to go to an expensive restaurant? Sounds like a scam.
