Is it weird to move to another country to be with a girl you met online?

I met my German girlfriend online and moved from England to live with her after a year of talking and occasionally meeting. My friends think I'm weird and they often joke about it. I met her online in a chatroom and i guess this is considered sad.

London to Frankfurt is like Miami to Jacksonville in distance. That doesn’t seem weird to me. While I mostly end up dating girls within an hour drive or whatever, I’ve met plenty of women in other cities and states when there for business or vacation. So nope, I think that’s reasonably normal. They probably idiots thinking you met and talked to a girl online, while they text message their girl on their phone all the time… Same shit...

Thank you, fully agree with the texting thing. So many people use apps like Tinder too and never get called sad. I think my friends just all met their girlfriends locally so it seems like something odd to them.

Thank you, i agree. I just hate when things have to be a big deal when really we are just trying something and if it doesn't work oh well at least we tried. But people treat me like i've had some kind of mental breakdown.

Well, you don't truly know a person through just visits. Everything is great and wonderful then, but real life is very different. I was long distance with someone for a year and some months, was ready to move, thought I had the perfect relationship but turned out he had been cheating on me the entire time. I tried to keep it together in the end and we lived together shortly and it was a nightmare. He was messy, sloppy, annoying, useless, ungrateful, vile and so on. There are many stories like this - everything is wonderful when visiting, but then the two move in together and everything falls apart. If LDR couples want to move in together, the smartest would be for one to find an apartment and a job in the new country, and then start dating each other, slow and steady. If things don't work out, you have a place and a stable job. I do hope everything works out for you, I do.

Okay i take your point. Its been 4 months living together so far and we are pretty respectful at the moment. She hasn't changed into someone unrecognisable so far but maybe time will tell. I suspect guys are more likely to be the disrespectful ones but i'm doing okay i hope. I guess its no different from moving in with someone from the same country. The stakes are slightly higher for the person who has moved, but if it fails and i have to come home so be it.

My only problem is friends who just think its the craziest thing someone could do.

@Asker if I were in your position, I would have let her move in with me. And 4 months is still the "honeymoon phase". See where it goes I guess. I personally am glad my LDR ended before it could continue since it was doomed from the start, but I still didn't realize it. If I were in your position now, I would make sure I get ready in case shit hits the fan. Best of luck to you.
