It's not more gentlemanlike at all to do that. To show up at someone's house unannounced to ask them on a date like that would be extremely awkward. Even if the girl likes you, doing that will be a big turnoff and she will probably say no.

Asking for a first date should be done in person (but that doesn't mean driving to her house unannounced either because that is always going to be creepy and awkward regardless) but a second date you should just ask her in a text or call her and ask. It doesn't matter if you hate texting. Do it in a text anyway and get used to texting. Some things in life you are going to hate, but you have to do them anyway.
