It's easy to see it that way at first glance, especially when you're on the outside looking in. But, the feelings people have about Valentine's Day can be way more complex than just being "mad" or "jealous" because they're single.
Some folks might feel the sting of commercialization, where it feels like the day is more about spending money than celebrating genuine connections. Then there's the whole thing about societal pressure—like everyone's expected to be in a romantic relationship or they're somehow incomplete. That can rub people the wrong way, especially if they're content with being single or are focusing on other aspects of their life.
Others might have had bad experiences tied to Valentine's Day, like breakups or unmet expectations, which can sour the day for them. And yeah, sure, there might be a few who are feeling a bit envious seeing couples all loved up, but it's not the whole picture.
It's like any holiday, really. Everyone's got their own vibes and reasons for feeling how they do. Some people are all about it, throwing heart-shaped confetti around like there's no tomorrow, while others might just want to treat it like any other day—and that's totally okay. It's all about respecting each other's feelings and finding your own way to either celebrate, ignore, or redefine the day in a way that feels right to you.
I don't think so, speaking as a man who has been single on Valentine's Day and a man who is now taken, I will say this.
People who are single view the holiday as a joke and a way to shame people who do not have a significant other. Some of these people are single by choice and others are because they just struggle in the dating world on general. A holiday that caters specifically for romance and couples not just in promotion for marketing but even towards ideals is enough to annoy individuals who are single because it is in there face weeks leading up to the event itself. "This Valentine's Day..." or "With Valentine's Day around the corner, come on down to this jewel store for a special discount to show how much you love her!" Even, "Valentine's Day discount for all couples!" It is enough to even annoy couples as well. It is in your face until it passes the idea of love spread through expensive gifts, dinners, chocolates, flowers, sex, etc. It is overkill.
Couples also view it as a hassle because of similar reasons. The idea of showing affection and love through expensive gifts should not be what a relationship is about. It about growing together and overcoming obstacles and bettering yourself not just individually, but as a couple. Going through the challenges and coming out a stronger couple with a healthy relationship that is shared through nostalgia and memories from the day you met to the day you ultimately part, it is the idea of sharing your life with someone and your time to show them you love them, care about them and want to be with them. Your actions, goals, ideals and boundaries are what make a relationship. Not some bullshit gifts with a price tag that loses its value annually on a day centered around "love"
Shades coming in hot with the wisdom!
Valentine's Day is a greedy holiday. It isn't for couples. It is for businesses to make a lot of money off lazy, uncreative people that would rather pay convenience than hard work. But flowers, dinner reservations, jewelry, or what ever people use to demonstrate their so called love.
Flowers can be grown cheaper, dinner can be cooked cheaper and doesn't require a reservation which isn't offered at most places as they want a first come first serve type of environment. So you take your date or loved one and wait forty-five minutes to an hour and a half to get a table and another thirty minutes to an hour to get food. How is that romantic?
Valentine's Day has turned into nothing but another holiday about how much money can be spent. Another thing ruined by people. So you only take one day out of the year to profess your love and affection to your S. O? Do you just keep it on cruise control the rest of the year?
I don't have to wait for Thanksgiving to be thankful for having a job, healthy kids, family and friends.
Mother's Day is another greedy holiday. This woman feeds you and takes care of you everyday of the whole year and you only stop to take one day out of the year to show your love and appreciation?
I think people who hate valentines day, are the same people who 'hate' on a lot of things.
Yes, I understand the hyped up 'singles awareness day', but i also view it as a day (or lets be honest a few hours of a day) to really set aside the chores, set aside the frustrations, set aside time and mental space to 'be there' for a partner if you have one.
For the people complaining about gifts, ask yourselves how often you actually do take the time to give gifts to your SO. If the response is, only during mandatory capitalist holidays, consider yourself the one lacking in generosity and creativity. You can 'gift' labor or recipes or youtube playlists or walks in the park - all things that dont require money, just a little bit of forethought on a certain calendar day purely because your current SO wants you to.
Im a girl who has never gotten flowers from a guy. Im not saying I need flowers ever (i have a black thumb), I just wish someone took the time to realize that even though its 'textbook' doesn't mean it is a less thoughtful gift or would bring any less joy or meaning!
Having a quality relationship in these days is hard. So all the nay sayers, dont rain on someone elses parade. It took a lot of work and silly fights and admitting that you were being stupid and were wrong. Let them eat cake for another day of the year.
One of the best comments I've read all day.
And the "I think people who hate valentines day, are the same people who 'hate' on a lot of things." holds so much truth. Well said!
I feel triggered by this question. Are you implying something Coach? Lol

No, because one day of the year being single isn't any different from being single the other 364 days of the year.
Personally I hate how overhyped the day is. Why do people put so much emphasis on that particular day to show how much you supposedly love your partner? You shouldn't have to devote one day of the year to tell or show your partner you love them! And I sure as hell don't need the stores throwing it in my face the moment Christmas is over!!! Lol
Sooooooo that's a yes? Ha Ha Ha
...
I'm giving you such a look right now

I guess for those that "hate" Valentine's day... But that's not the same as those that just don't buy into the hype of Valentine's day...
There's married and single people that buy into it... And there's married and single people that don't...
I think that is the most likely explanation of the hatred.
Maybe, but there might be other reasons too, I mean you can't just have the same reason for disliking one thing can you? Out of so many people that are single and hate it they must have different reasons.
Maybe they don't know what the point is of celebrating it is
Maybe they broke up with someone on that day and it gives them bad memories
Maybe someone they cared about died on that day
Perhaps they are angry at the system of overpricing chocolates for the event
There can be more than one reason, these are not me ranting, just possibilities I thought of, I want to assure you that even as a single person my whole life I do not hate Valentines day, I consider the overpricing a bit bothersome but I sneak past it because I get the chocolates on discount after the event and even if I don't get away with that every time I sometimes just get myself Valentines chocolate because it is still good chocolate and on the day they are selling loads of it.
People should stop being so pessimistic, it is a day full of chocolate, sure you are single but there is lots of chocolate you can go buy yourself and it is some really nice ones too! :D
Yeah for those deemed creepy or ugly by no fault of their own they get tired of people who were LUCKY enough to be born with attractive features looking down on them flaunting their status in their faces like they actually earned something. So we "butt hurt" and "mad" at this shallow selfish society determining one's quality of life and whether or not they are allowed to look down on others or not and societies acceptance of these behaviors. If you're born with physically attractive traits you can use, abuse, arrogantly look down on others because you're entitled (even though you're a hypocrite and a shit human being and you didn't earn a damn thing but society doesn't care so carry on.) Unfortunately if you weren't lucky enough to be blessed with attractive traits well you just don't matter to society it doesn't matter if you treat others well or if you have good morals and do what's right. This holiday is nothing more than an opportunity for the entitled brats who know they are lucky in life it's their opportunity to rub it in your face as if we aren't exposed to this bullshit hierarchy since the day we are born.
i think "hating anything" is an issue. cause hate is really not an emotion, that i think a "healthy, balanced mind" has.
having said that, what's wrong with being butthurt that you didn't score a date? xD i mean that's sort of a bummer, isn't it?
i see more valid reasons to disagree with valentines day. love doesn't care about what day it is. i see no good reason for waiting with a confession or with asking for a date just for that day. it's not like it's "not ok" to do it any other day of the year. the only people that "need" this holiday are capitalist companies, that wanna sell you their overpriced junk xD
Well people hate TF out of this holiday! so lol
yeah that's what i call mentally unstable and imbalanced. it's always ok, to be a bit bummed out, when you see everyone having dates while you're sitting at home alone and dusty :D but even if one is in that situation, they should still have the self awareness, that a good chunk of that is their own fault and that the rest of it is just outside of anyones control. not "valentines day's" fault.
Yeah I hear ya man!
also i think media plays a role in this. everyone posts about their date. nobody posts about how alone and dusty they are :D so our impression of the real world becomes quite skewed.
I agree with you on the idea that any day can end up being the most special and significant one in a relationship and that setting up a schedule for emotional connection is a pointless & laughable concept! It puts unnecessary strain and pressure on people who are entitled to follow their own insights and act when they are comfortable and enthusiastic about it. Any day they please. We have to be so dramatic and spoiled as humans it's honestly so contrived and illogical
@jessacat83 yeah. i personally, "if i actualy scored a date", would make it a thing that i intentionally make the appointment for a date the day after or the day before :P nothing wrong with being a bit of an edgelord sometimes :D
Right on, I'm a weirdo but I feel like a 1st or 2nd date that day is kind of asking for trouble lol no worries I can wait until the entire future of my psyche isn't at stake 😅
@jessacat83 for me, i made the best experience not even calling it a date. cause that creates a framework of expectations which can make the thing feel quite awkward and stiff. i'm just trying to have a good day with a new person. and if the day is good, i may wanna do it again. if not, it's still a valuable experience. so i see it as a win either way. a date usually comes with a set of expectations, that really easily makes you determine it to be a failure. that's pretty bad for mental health long term, considering that dating means "failing a lot" :D
I'm all about the chill hang out version of a "date" which also seems kind of old fashioned and formal. Like a job interview for sex and company and yes, inevitably clashing and learning from hurting one another, sadly. This person has the potential to see me in my sweats with the flu looking like a ghoul and also have the distinction of being present during the majority of my farts, belching, cranky ranting and obvious voodoo curse that's rendered me unbelievably accident prone and ER visits suck a LOT. So let's cut the shit and have an open conversation for the first time spent together. That's the endgame anyway. Finding your main co-conversator (?) right?
@jessacat83 well getting to know someone is factually a job interview for sex :D but i came to see job interviews as way less formal. because i don't see job interviews as "me begging for work". it's actually more getting to know the company and the collegues as well as the culture of the company with the goal to get a good fit between what they want and have to offer vs what i want and have to offer. it's basically the same as seeing somene with romantical/sexual intend. you're looking for people that you wanna spend a good chunk of your time with. for that, it's best to find people you actually wanna spend your time with :D
i mean the goal should be that both get out of it what they wanted :D be it sex, relationship or a job for a company xD
I like your way of thinking 😉
Nah, I think there's plenty of valid reasons to dislike Valentine's Day. For some people, there's definitely bitterness there because they're single or because they've had previous bad experiences. But there's also just valid reasons to hate it because it's a manufactured holiday, it's yet another sale season with cheesy and repetitive ads and consumerist fever, and because it's just... so much fuckin' pink.
Hating on Valentine's Day doesn't necessarily mean someone's single. It could just mean they have good taste or a sense of appropriate boundaries on consumerism.
Everybody is different. For me I don't necessarily find it important. Asthma to do about not able to find anybody. You got to have one day in order to express your love, or anything else in life? That makes no sense to me. At the same time, I don't celebrate that holiday anymore. Let alone I don't celebrate holidays to begin with. So Valentine's Day for me is just like any other day. Has nothing to do with my personal romantic decisions.
No. I don't think that people's minds, emotions or motivations are as universal or predictable as people tend to believe. That's just a cliche that has been in the culture for years. There are countless reasons someone might dislike a particular holiday or tradition etc. Perhaps they lost a family member that day in the past or are just negative about the commercial aspect. Maybe they're just not into putting so much emphasis on what happens on ONE specific day that is really not different than any other day. Generalizing each other is what leads to miscommunication and misunderstanding between us as people. We are all uniquely made-up of millions of tiny moments and traits that we have no way of knowing about one another so we lazily make assumptions and that's what causes the constant confusion and hostility among us.
Well Valentine's day was named after some sort of massacre that happened a long time ago.
I'm not entirely sure how it became a day for people to celebrate love.
Anyways I mean it's understandable for people to hate that day. Afterall if you're single and you see everyone else celebrating it. Of course you would feel left out and alone. Therefore hating and being mad.
But to me it's just like any other day. And sometimes my co-workers would bring in chocolates for the office to share, so... Yeah.
I can't hate free chocolate lol.
I don't thik it's about being "butt hurt" as you put it. I think the problem with valentines day for single people is that the couples tend to look at the single people with pity.
Like somehow it's not okay to be single. One of the worst things my recently engaged friend said to me was "i couldn't imagine being alone, like what an earth would you do by yourself, you must be lonely"
Like excuse me !!! Shit like that just makes you think that people look down on you because you're single. Around valentines day this attitude gets worse.
So i don't think it's being jealous it's annoying being patronised
Yes exactly this!! I hate such people so much... what do they expect us to do? Just get a date for Valentine's day to not look pitiful and lonely? It's not like we singles are wizards and can just magically create a partner...
Golden Tulip exactly that. It's so annoying and half the time I personally think it's because that person wouldn't know how to be on their own; so try to make singles feel bad
Yes precisely! Many of such people are unhappy or accept too much in relationships desperately to keep it working... to not be alone.
I’m not single and I loathe Valentine’s Day. I feel like even acknowledging this day exists knocks a few IQ points from ya. But then I hate most things normal people like, like romantic gestures, proposals 🤮, Christmas, Frozen, salted caramel macchiatos, Justin Bieber, Snapchat.
I think it's because of the special emphasis on the day. A lot of people just fear that they won't find someone a little extra that day because they feel the pressure to be with someone and want to love someone/ be loved.
From an outside perspective it looks a little arbitrary but ultimately making a little more effort than we can usually put in. Taking some time to have a nice day is nice.
They have a point that it shouldn't have to be a commercialised day for these things to happen.
Isn't valentines celebrations a sign that a relationships failing? You need a special day to tell someone how you feel and how much you care? Healthy functioning relationships you do that every day. So it's a bit redundant really. It's also trying to crowbar Christian festival worship into daily life. The dude was arrested and dragged before the streets, Before being beaten to death with clubs then getting his head cut off, really romantic.
And to address the second part of your question - I'm not single, but I do see the only people genuinely gaining out of Valentine's day are companies selling chocolate, flowers and cheesy greetings cards
The funny thing is is it's really only Anglo countries that make Valentine's Day to be about romance and what not. Predominantly, top of that list, is commercialized Americans.
Elsewhere in Europe and even some areas of the UK it has various themes that don't necessarily have much to do with romance per sé. The day is named after a martyred saint after all not cut out paper hearts.
As for hate. What's so special about celebrating a day with millions of others like a good sheep? Baaaaa. That's all I hear from people who go out of their way to do something excessive on Valentine's Day. It's one day. If all your efforts to show you care goes into one day the person likely doesn't really care. Look at it this way if it wasn't expected via the baaaing, good sheep follow what Simon says, hype of Valentine's Day they'd do nothing but treat it as another day.
Some might be, admittedly I used to be one of them but there’s no need to be. I realized that I don’t have to be in a relationship to enjoy Valentine’s Day. I can enjoy it spending time with my mom, seeing my friends or even just doing something for myself like watching sappy movies or getting my nails done. Sure I’d like to have a date on Valentine’s Day but it’s not the end of the world if I don’t.
No, it's not about bitterness. It's more about people being annoying on Valentine's Day. I usually just turn off notifications on my phone because every conversation I have with people that are in relationships boils down to "me and my S/O are gonna have a lot of sex tonight." Also, things are over-priced around Valentine's Day, and there are cringey decorations everywhere that look like shit. It's objectively worse than an average day.
Even if they are pessimistic. It doesn’t stop me from enjoying the holiday. Even if people see it as ‘pointless’. It gives me more reason to wear bright red or pink or both together. While buying decorations and eating all the limited edition sweets and goodies 🍫🧁🍪🥮❤️💝😋🤎.
Maybe some are, but not this guy !!
I don't indulge V-Day, or "Amateur's Day" as I call it, because I treat my girl plenty good so many other days of the year, she doesn't care about that particularly day. She agrees that its a day for guys who don't do anything for their girlfriends other than the "required days", like birthdays and Christmas, and if they happen to even know when their anniversary day is !!
So, we leave it to the amateur's to do their best on that day! :-D
If they actively hate it then probably yeah they're jealous.
I'm mostly indifferent towards Valentine's, I don't hate it, don't like it either, not into celebrating it but I'm not gonna hate others for doing so.
If anything I find it funny how modern celebration of Valentine's day has absolutely no connection to the original reason the day exists.
Pretty much. I dont see a reason to hate a holiday. Just say you’re single and ready to mingle and be done
Exactly! those haters lol
People suck in many many ways. Odds are I'd say men have a hard time grasping what women want because women have narrowed their standards to try and make a better life for themselves. They dont want a yes ma'am let me get the door unless you've got the swagger for that. They want truer connection even for a hook up. And some dont, a lot will check out before they check in based on vibes. The whole dating thing isn't as simple as it used to be and I still blame the drunk dead ass men and fathers raping and taking all the advantage the man of the house could get dating back 50 years ago to now. Shit still happens trust me.
Its a state of mind as well as some bitterness. Its Valentines Day, love supposedly is in the air, while you are probably alone, resentful (Personally I was suppose to be married on the 13th, so I got some reason to be resentful and angry) Its the feeling of love, and love is a feeling which most people want, desire, yearn for. And its not parental, sibling, friend love. It is love of another. A perceived soul mate (not going to put a One Night Stand because thats a fleeting feeling)..
Yes I’m very butthurt and jealous that I’m single it’s not something I hide I would want nothing more than to find a woman who really did love/care for me It’s actually makes me really sad tbh that I can’t find that one person dating or being with anyone else would be a waste of time
I don’t really hate it as such, I just find it boring. We often get each other thoughtful gifts or do thoughtful gestures... we don’t need a special day for it.
by the way, I’ve received my gift already, a bottle of rum!
Because it's become nothing but "men's extortion day." It's a day to guilt guys into buying shit they can't afford for women who don't deserve it. Remember the whole "he got it at Jerod's" BS? It's a day for women to compare notes on how well their fella "towed the line" While women get a complete pass. They don't have to do anything at all. You've never seen a "she got it at Brownell's" ad or one from Outback, proclaiming "Nothing says I love you like a nice, juicy T-bone."
You wouldn't phrase the question as disrespectful as you did, if you knew how it felt to be long time lonely and there was nothing you could do to change that. Besides that, if you truly love, you don't need a day in your calendar to remind someone of that. The idea that it has only been invented by the florists sounds reasonable... fell free to fall for it.
I dont hate it. I just find it unnecessary and cringy. Because any day can be a day to love and cherish ur partner. Do we need a specific day for that?
I think it's a bit of a dumb holiday since you should be romancing you're special someone all year round. But also it's a crappy reminder of how lonely and unhappy I am and reminds me of all the break ups and missed opportunities with some great girls I've missed and will always regret. So Valentine's is a bad time for me.
I like Valentine’s Day. Yes, it is commercial, just like every other celebration. And it’s ok. Sure, we do show love to our partners all year round. But what’s wrong with having a special day to be a little extra? There aren’t many celebrations, so I see no problem with one more.
I'm currently talking to 2 girls right now, and trying to attempt to see if either one of them will be my Valentine this year and to see if it will go anywhere further after that, as in, possibly or hopefully end up as my girlfriend. But I don't like to jump to conclusions too quickly, as in, for example, if a woman agrees to go on a date with me, I try not to celebrate or get too excited or get too happy because there is still the possibility she might flake on me. another possibility is that just because I get a first date, doesn't mean I'll get a second date, I've been on my share of first dates that did not result in a second date.
It's more to do with the over commercialization of the day and having it rammed in your face wherever you go.
Nah, the opposite. they are usually regretting or missing a loved one.
Had a friend of a friend whose brother killed himself and his family on Valentines. I think only one of his kids survived. But it was a long while back. Things are rarely straightforward.
I for example don’t like it but I find it stupid honestly, I don’t hate it although. It just means nothing to me. If people celebrate cool, but people gonna celebrate anything lol
Ps I am not single
I'm not jealous and the reason why i can't find a date because my girlfriend broke up with me last year ago but it's all good now we are strong good friends so yeah I don't care if someone celebrating Valentine Day I will be just happy for them :).
No in fact quite the contrary: if you have someone special in your life, then you don't/shouldn't need one arbitrary day to make them feel special. It's frankly a pointless holiday.
Probably, it's important to not get angry at the world for what you don't have. I get upset sometimes that I'm single but I know that it's no one's fault but my own.
It’s a yes and a no for me lol. I’m happy for the people who have a partner and want to show how much they love them etc, but I do get a little jealous because I’m over here buying myself chocolate or a card because no one else is getting it for me 💀🤡
Some are, but why shouldn't they be angry if they feel left out of something that used to be a standard part of life for the majority of people.
I have had partners since I was in my middle teens right up to today and I'm not bad to look at but I'm no model either. I have younger people in my family and extended family that have no one and they aren't bad looking either.
Something changed. something is different than it was 20 years ago.
Not always, something traumatic may have happened on the day to them. However if someone hates vday, and rants and raves about it all the time, how its dumb, not a real holiday yadda yadda... they might have some butt hurtin, or not enough of it. If you hate something like a holiday, dont validate it. Just leave it as Feb 14th and if someone wishes you a happy Vday, just say thanks and same to you. Not a big deal.
Valentien day whether you are with someone or not it is j sut a commercial day for the business. Valentine day you can celebrate it any day of the year not that day in particular just to give more money to the business
I'm not a Christian, so I don't care for a Christian holiday that has been jumped on by pretty much anyone who sells tacky crap.
They sure as sh*t sound like it.
I love that 14. th February day because PornHub gives their free premium privileges for that day. No bank card information required :D

On the other hand I understand when some say how over-commercialized it became. The marketers are talented in finding ways to make people buy and pay. Not talented enough to convince me in most cases however. Capitalism.
Because there comes breakup day after 20th Feb. So it makes me mad that the love people are celebrating is FAKE. Also these bloody markets are looking to exploit couple and telling them to express love with expensive products.
But personally I admire Valentine's Day. I even celebrate it with myself and my fictional character. :)
Lol I love Valentine's day , at least I get to see so many happy faces with a bunch of chocolate and flowers.. I also think there are many cute decoration in flowers shop and on streets
I'm in a relationship and agree it's just another day - since I'm working as usual.
I don't know as one's butt has to hurt, just because he or she doesn't like Valentine's Day.
I don't hate valentines day. Bitter memories just flash on this day particularly this year.
Sure why not.
I personally hate having the fact that others are happy the one day a year and they have to rub it in everyone's faces, especially at work where they make a big distraction out of it bothering everyone most of all the single people like "look what I got a work and you didn't!" It was the same in school for me.
Eh depends, but HATE is a strong word so you're probably right. I don't see why someone would hate Valentine's day unless it bothered them to some extant. Could also be a horrible breakup or unrequited love.
No they’re people who know Valentines is a waste of time and is just a distraction to what’s actually happening outside the world. Just like how social media and Tv are just distractions. A mask. They could care less about being single.
I am married and both me and my wife hate it.
Why? Because makes no sense! Valentine's Day is whenever we fucking want!
usually they been "SO DRAMATIZED" from everything they despise Valentine's Day and Christmas stuff that reminds them of the past and the good times
I’m not single and I absolutely loathe Valentine’s Day. Just no need.
I would hate valentine even if i was in a relationship it's so cringy.
My question is does it even matter?
Let’s assume they’re mad, why is that invalidating it?
Why are they “just mad” instead of just “mad”?
So here’s a time that is very unpleasant for them, are they not allowed to be angry and frustrated with things that are frustrating and unpleasant?
It's kind of like having a day celebrating being rich and then wondering why the poor people are giving you nasty looks.
Yes, I wouldn't see any other reason why someone hates Valentine's day
I don't think so. Some people just don't buy into man made holidays.
It's a reminder to those who are single against their wish. It doesn't surprise me that they harbor some resentment for the day and for those who are in a relationship and celebrating it.
Why would someone hate Valentine's day?
Giving up on love is for losers.
