I think both are nervous. I'm usually nervous on first dates and after breaking the ice usually find out that they were also nervous, but it also depends on the person too

I'd say so but it depends, sitting and enjoying coffee while talking is just as much of a date as anything else, except since he asked for coffee rather than for dinner it sounds like a more casual kind of thing and not a formal kind of thing. It sounds like he wants to get to know you and see what you're like in person or when it's just you two hanging out
