I think he's trying hard not to come off as clingy as for younger people in a relationship one of the things I know from my own experience. Is the fear that the older partner will abandon them so they will often mentally force themselves to seem a lot older. To try and meet the standards of the older half.

From what I've seen with age gaps is that at 5 years and larger of an age gap (And yes I have a similar age gap with my relationship.) But I notice my younger partner very much has a fixation and or favorite person ideology with me. And it makes them desperate to do anything to meet you or I the older partners imaginary standards. Like with anyone else they probably would have maybe spats and or act immature but cause they are so infatuated with us the older partner they become desperate to be an equal as nothing would probably hurt them more than if their. Image is getting used to put down or insult the older partner. I find I have to verbally tell my partner that its okay for her to be her energetic self and thats the side of her that I love. As a result she isn't so overly focused on coming off as older than she is. Cause if I don't remind her I can tell she is super stressed out about acting like she is 25 or 30 around me despite being actually only 20 years old.
