He can say, but should not be negative. If he doesn't like it, he should ask her to change it back to previous style. Or else, he can complement her. Whatever it is, he shouldn't say anything negative which might ruin the relationship by hurting her for a silly reason

I personally like to be told the truth, but I think a lot would not like it that directly :D.. probably better to wait a bit and see if one gets used to it, and if not it is also ok to at least say one prefer the other style.

Yeah you should be able to discuss little things like that with a long term partner
