This guy has been my friend for many years now. We were in college together but now just chat over Instagram. He sends me several pictures of himself, his day to day activities, silly memes. But the thing is, we are in different places and will probably never get to meet again IRL. It's possible but difficult considering the distance.
Whenever I mention that we should talk less or that we should not miss each other so much, he gets upset and goes silent. I have to apologize then and make him believe that everything is okay.
Has this guy started liking me? I know one day our conversations will fade but how do I make him understand without upsetting him?

I’ve been there before and while it is hurtful, one of you has to be strong and do the hard thing by creating some space. It seems like you’re struggling a lot with the distance and as a result you absentmindedly urge him to do what you can’t. But if you’re mainly the one being vocal about your uncertainty then the next move is really on you. Moving forward with distancing yourself from him you don’t have to announce it or have some deep talk. You don’t have to put him through all the ‘we should try not to miss each other so much and back off from each other’, because it’s just unnecessary word vomit. It’s like telling someone all the time you two should breakup and never leaving them, that becomes hurtful. Just move in silence.
Why can’t you meet in person anymore? I think you can don’t give up hope
