00 Reply 692 opinions shared on Dating topic. If I'm always at her place and she doesn't know where I live, sure. I have epilepsy, which on the spectrum of neurological disorders isn't so bad, but can have some horrible side effects from the meds. Also some bad burn out when a seizure does happen.
I've dated women in the past with stuff as minor as depression, the depression can kill the relationship, the dive in libido can do so, the meds making it harder to get off.
There is just too much that can go fubar there. So, if there was always the option to cut and run I would, which fits a narrow definition of dating. I know it sounds really dick, and hypocritical as I expect more than I give, but it is the truth.
From personal experience I've found putting my worst foot forwards weeds people out pretty fast, your body count gets insane, but at the end of it all you'll wind up with someone who accepts you for you.

+1 yOn paper I would consider it maybe, but would prefer not to. However, if I had chemistry with a girl and found out she has schizophrenia, then I wouldn't give a shit.
Finding a person you genuinely have a connection with is hard these days, so by that point it wouldn't bother me a lot. I think most people are like that when it comes to dating where they "want this and want that", but when it comes down to it, we all want someone we connect with. All the superficial bullshit or whatever we build up in our heads ends up not mattering012 Reply- +1 y
@AaronKrieger I respectfully disagree with your assertion that "all the superficial nonsense ends up not mattering".
- +1 y
@Shiningtempest Most people, when they have a strong connection/chemistry with someone are not going to give a shit if said person does not meet all their preferences that are superficial. The only ones that it matters to are people who let it.
- +1 y
@msc545 No, my mistake was jumping the gun of including it without full context with my main point - the type of ideal person people build up in their heads doesn't really matter in the end.
I should had included a segment for cases where it is debilitating despite being medicated or how easily things can change if the medication is tweaked with (one fuck up can mess up a medication for someone even if they go back to it afterwards)
You are correct in that Schizophrenia can be debilitating, but by the same token it isn't always, since Schizophrenia is a spectrum. In this situation, I assumed that she was one of those people to where they can have a normal life for the most part through medication, discipline, and years of building it up to where it is manageable (for medication, it'd be the case of where her meds do not get in the way with her functioning).
- +1 y
@AaronKrieger If she doesn't meet majority of my preferences, strong connection & chemistry means nothing to me.
- +1 y
@Shiningtempest Most people are not like that, but there are exceptions.
- +1 y
@AaronKrieger I have an unwavering belief that strong connection & chemistry is meaningless if she doesn't meet majority of my preference.
- +1 y
@AaronKrieger schizophrenia is not a "spectrum" at all. Where did you learn this?
- +1 y
- +1 y
@msc545 What are you talking about? Psychotic disorders are considered as heterogeneous and especially for something such as Schizophrenia. Hell, it's why they even removed subtypes of Schizophrenia and it's treated under as a spectrum disorder for the most part. You should read the DSM-5, as it covers all of this. All the details I've stated are likely not 100% accurate, since it's been a while, but it's definitely on point of the criteria for Schizophrenia.
+1 yThere's a huge stigma against people, who suffer from a mental illness. Most people would be reluctant to even date someone with depression... That's why it's not wise to disclose any such personal information, unless you know someone pretty well (unless you want them to start avoiding or discriminating against you)
12 Reply- +1 y
I beg to disagree a bit. Before committing to a relationship, it's better to tell.
Why?
Imagine getting a text from your girlfriend, at 2am, while you are chilling and watching Netflix after a long day at work... "I wanna die".
Now, it's in the middle of pandemic, you are 4 cities away from her, have no car and she is not answering your call.
Imagine the mental stress. - +1 y
No one's obligated to share their medical record with someone you don't know well. The way society treats these people as criminals, I wouldn't blame them, if they kept it a secret. Not everyone with a mental illness is dangerous, violent, unstable or suicidal. It is possible for individuals with schizophrenia or depression to live a normal or fully functional life with good treatment
The famous mathematician John Nash is one such example
6K opinions shared on Dating topic. Hmm honestly I don't know I've never dealt with anyone who's had it before I mean if I found out about it after we had been dating for a bit. I'd stick with it because I won't leave her just because of that but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd be really out of my element when dealing with it and not sure if it'd last.

+1 yNope. She'd truly have to knock it out of the park in every other way to a degree that isn't realistic to expect. If she's otherwise unremarkable across the board, there's 8 billion people in the world... so... you know...

So yes, If I liked her and her personality then why not!!
I would support her with what she’s going through.

Same with a girl with Depression.
I'm sorry, but I got enough things to deal with.

Asker+1 yBut with the medication I am like a normal girl again.
- +1 y
Ah it was you, sorry.
But what happens if you forgot to take it? When you run out of it? How long before signs start showing? Will I have time to drive and get you one?
I'm sorry but I dated someone who has depression and while I love her so much, if there are triggers, it stresses the heck out of me.
If I assumed wrong for people with schizophrenia, then I apologize.
Asker+1 yI have forgotten to take it before by a couple of days and I was fine but it takes a while for the medication to lose its affect. Maybe days. Possibly a week or two before it starts losing its affect. People with Schizophrenia is a little different from people with depression. If I get off of it, my mood can become unstable due to the hearing voices and so I totally understand if you couldn't deal with something like that.
- +1 y
Yes, that's what I can't deal - another source of stress. It's about me, and I am so sorry if it sounds selfish.
But going by what you mentioned, maybe, just maybe I could give someone who has it a shot. I mean, unlike depression, which comes at a random time - your medication seems to work 100% of the time and wears out for a while. - +1 y
@qwert1234 I wouldn't date a woman with schizophrenia because I have enough things to deal with in my life.
+1 yYes. She is diffrent, thats all. I have High functioning Autism, so i know about being diffrent.

My schizo cousin cut her husband's ear off and killed their dog
Asker+1 yI didn't know schizophrenia could get that bad for some people. I must have the very mild version because the only thing it had me doing was being a bit erratic in thinking and depressed and suicidal but not wanting to harm others. Since I've been on my meds, I no longer have those thoughts though.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yI don’t even wanna be friends with them. I had a friend with schizo, she is on many medications and it is just a lot for me to handle “all” of her. I have my own problems and i don’t want to add more.

Asker+1 yI'm sorry but not all of us are like that. I was hearing voices that weren't there but once I started taking Abilify (one medication), they stopped and I have been pretty normal ever since. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a friend who had it though but just wanted to say that not all with schizophrenia are unstable or hard to get along with if managing it with medication.
Opinion Owner+1 yI understand that but it was just so scary, she is always angry and do crazy shit even when she’s on medications, I don't know if that’s the side effects of taking many meds in a day but i hope things will get better for you
Asker+1 yThank you. They already have gotten better. I hope things get better for your friend.

Asker+1 yWhy not? I am managing well with the medication. Its like I don't even have it anymore.
Opinion Owner+1 yBut you do have it. I'm sorry you're dealing with that and it sucks that you have to. But women are hard enough in general to deal with. Mental illness is not an exact science. I'm glad your medication is working and I hope that continues. But it'll work till it doesn't and then they'll have to adjust it. And I wouldn't want to deal it's unpredictability.
Asker+1 yThat's totally understandable.
Opinion Owner+1 yMy advice to you is don't hit guys with that bit of info. Until you know them at least a couple weeks. Because then they'll be somewhat invested at that point. And then they might say to themselves. "Well she hasn't done anything erratic so far". I'll fully admit I'm no expert on this subject. So I might be getting some stuff wrong. Don't expect most guys to think much different
Asker+1 yI'm fortunately with someone who knows I have it and loves me inspite of that. I was a bit erratic when I wasn't on my meds but I am much more normal now and living a normal life with him.
Opinion Owner+1 y👍👍👍
