The best? "Hey, wanna get coffee when you're done?"

If that's too bold, get socials but, in my mind, that takes the human out of it and puts you on opposite sides of keyboards.

Still another way is go a lot. Smile. Make eye contact. In other words, you're never out of his mind. And then he asks you or you're like buds and then end up going out.

But, I still maintain the best way is just casually ask him if he wants to get coffee or a burger or (ha) pizza sometime.

Did you try sitting next to him and putting your hand on his leg, maybe rub it slightly for a second or two. Otherwise, try looking right into his eyes when you talk to him and speak a bit softly and sweetly.
