My older brother decided to become a vegetarian. His reasons were that our grandparents died young (50s-60s), both of our parents have cancer (mom was cured but got it again 5 years later, dad is doing ok just tired and we don’t know his prognosis), and he notices that he’s in a better mood when he doesn’t eat meat. Since making this decision, he’s told me that people treat him differently.
I didn’t believe him until we took a flight back home from Europe last week. My brother had the window, I the middle seat, and another guy had the aisle. The guy was super talkative, asking us about our trip, talking about his, and bragging about his kids. Then randomly, a flight attendant walked by and called my brother out to confirm that he requested a vegetarian meal. My brother nodded, the guy glared at him and didn’t speak to us for the rest of the flight. I was so shocked. The whole 11 hours back to the USA, this man didn’t say a word. We got off the plane and had to catch an escalator to go up to customs. This guy, his wife, and kids were in front of us. When he saw us coming, he pushed his family out of the way and shielded them. It was truly bizarre!
Other experiences that my brother had that stand out to me are from dating. He told his last 2 dates up front that he was vegetarian. The first woman said she was okay with it, then sometime after the fourth date she was not and kept complaining about him being different. The second woman said the same and was supportive because her aunt was vegetarian, but by the time the third date came around, they were talking at a restaurant and she kept shouting “MEN NEED MEAT!” and banged the table. What’s wrong with people? Why don’t they give my brother a chance to explain his decision and accept him? It’s the same food, just minus the meat. Are they afraid? I don’t get this strange behavior my brother keeps encountering.
