Whether it is "bad" is a very subjective evaluation. Dating a first cousin once removed (which means dating the child of your first cousin) is illegal in six states in the US (Kentucky, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Utah, and Washington) but legal in the other 44 states. I would be surprised if it is illegal anywhere else in the world. It is not prohibited by the Bible or by the Quran.

All couples have some risk of producing a child with an inherited birth defect; that risk is generally estimated around 3%. First cousins have a higher rate, generally estimated around 6%. A first cousin once removed relationship would fall between those two numbers.

However, the other risk in cousin mating is the potential consequences if a relationship goes sour. Do you want to see your ex at every family gathering for the rest of your lives? Do you want to deal with family members "taking sides" after you break up?

I just had to do a little research about what exactly "once removed" means. (I've never quite been clear on what a "first cousin vs a second cousin" was... now I am).

I don't think you are talking about a cousin once removed. (google it and see... but if you are, then you're definitely related. Closely)

If you are indeed talking about a first cousin once removed, then yes, I think it's wrong. For sure.

It's actually a very close blood relation, for closer the a second cousin and experts on the subject don't recommend getting any closer then 3rd cousins for any kind of relationship where kids may be a possibility.
