People usually say “I have a boyfriend/girlfriend” because it feels safer and simpler than rejecting someone directly especially if the vibe feels pushy or uncomfortable.

Would it be cleaner to just say, “I’m not interested”? Yes.

Is everyone always comfortable doing that? No.

So is it wrong? Not really.

It’s more of a self protection shortcut, not a moral failure.

No. I mean it's not going to change anything. I mean if you find out they lied are you really going to call them on it? You have your answer already.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a believer in honesty. But this is a way to reject someone without actually rejecting them. So arguably it more humane. I mean even if you find out they lied it's probably not going to be when you're face to face with them.
