Did he see it as a date or just hanging out, and why the sudden rejection?

Im F/27 and he’s M/31 We knew each other casually about the 12 years ago and have run into each other maybe 1-3 times over the years through social gatherings of mutual friends. He moved to another state. We never talked too much. About 6-7 weeks ago we followed each other on socials and we started to talk a bit. I said I’d be in his area and we should catch up and hang out and he agreed. Was meant to be just coffee. He turned it into coffee and then lunch… hugged me, paid for everything, opened all the doors, drove me around the corner to my car and smiled at me the whole time. Said he had a nice time. I sent a text saying when my flight landed and told him he was super sweet and to let me know if he wanted to talk more and hang out again… maybe call and he told me he was super sorry but he wasn’t interested in me? It was very very weird. All of mutual friends thought so because he is shy/insecure and Doesn’t go out with girls often. They thought the fact we went out at all was a big sign for him.

He gave no reason…. Not like I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to come across that way and give you the wrong idea or hey like that was fun but I didn’t feel anything romantic….

Very bizarre …. I’m guessing maybe he did like but it was the distance? He maybe didn’t want to say because he didn’t want me to negotiate it or argue?

I know someone told me he dated someone several months back long distance and it didn’t work out… maybe he didn’t want to go through that again?
