Do you like being called smart?

I might be one of the odd people who don't enjoy being called "smart" all the time.

I'm not trying to be rude to the poeple that call me that and all and am thankful.

I don't like being called smart even though I passed 1 grade level in which was 7th grade, because I was too smart for taking state tests and all that blah stuff which surprisingly was easy for me and am going to graduate from high school this year.

FYI: I wasn't born in the U.S. so please execuse my English.

Anyways, here are my reasons why I don't like being called "smart":

Trust:

I feel like all those people want me to give the the right answer on stuff and which I mostly get wrong becasue I need time to think it through which takes me roughly about 1 to 2 min, but I mostly feel like I'm being forced to answer whatever questions they have really fast and I hate how they trust me on everything. Yes I might be intellegent, but please don't trust everything taht I say because even smart people get things wrong and I am human. I'm no perfect!

USE:

I feel like people use me for their own good and especially the once that try to trick me but no I'm already 6 steps a head of you and I know what you'll do to use me.

Attention:

I fell like I get to be the center of attention when someone notices me and my how my barin works on stuff and it makes me angry but I stay quiet.

It makes me angry because I get asked way too many questions from students about homework and etc. Just leave me alone. :/

My history with being called smart:

My parents have fucking always called me and my siblings very smart, told us the teachers said we were super smart...
But from about 4th grade to 9th grade, many of my fellow acquaintances and peers just assumed I was less-than-smart. I got really good grades though. You wouldn't believe how many times I heard the phrase "Wow, I didn't think you were that smart" or even "You don't seem like you'd be that smart". I guess kids didn't understand how demeaning that can seem...
Honestly, it was probably because of the friends I hung out with. They started out as trouble causers and I hung out with them because they were fun and we were hilarious. They became the stoners/law-breakers by 8th or 9th grade, and I just got new friends by default.

But, high school is when I started to do not-so-well in the grades department, mostly because a lack of (knowing how to study) and homework. By then, my peers had gotten used to the idea that I was smart. And eventually, when I would talk about my less-than-satisfactory (to my standard) grades, they would literally say, "Damn Brett, I thought you were smarter."

It's like, "Hey, FUCK YOU too, ya fuckin' dick!" This is why grades are a fucking retarded way of measuring anything but the ability to do what you're told. My intelligence level has never changed, and I haven't "lost knowledge", but I still got worse grades in high school, so people stopped assuming I was "smart"?

First of all, you spelled brain wrong. lol. If people are using you, then they aren't your friends. Just cut contact with them. If they ARE your friend, then they aren't using you. They look to you for guidance, and you should accept that responsibility and be proud. That doesn't mean putting yourself in a bind to help. It means taking the time to help because you have been blessed with the ability to do so. Being smart is a gift. It may feel like a curse, but God gave you the gift to help others and he wants you to use it. I know it's frustrating, but it could also be an advantage. Maybe you should charge tutoring fees to the classmates you don't well. Just my opinion. I consider myself a "math nerd". I am proud of that fact, and I love helping others as well. I have a bookkeeping and tax service business. I charge decent prices, but there are some that I help for free cuz I know they can't afford it. Go with your gut instict, but also try to see through their eyes before getting irritated. This may be a future business venture for you. :)

I'm not too thrilled about being called smart because often the same people will call another person smart who is very VERY far from it.

People overuse the word to describe someone they really like without actually looking up the definition of the bloody word.

So I'm very wary of people complimenting me, then giving the exact same compliment to a complete moron not 5 minutes later.

No, not really. It is nice when someone appreciates your work or an accomplishment of yours, but it juste puts pressure on you to act and be "smart" all the time. Everyone is susceptible to doing stupid things..

I can relate to being used. Back in high school, I'd be forced to give the presentations of group assignments all the time.

When people notice you are "smart" they expect you to function like a machine that never fails, but I do fail, which is only human.

Good mytake. I agree mostly; I dont mind being called smart, I like it sometimes but I also dont like it when people ask me something or want me to help because like mentioned in this article, it takes me a couple minutes to think about it and I dont do well under pressure.

I don't mind it as a general label, a sort of vague relative description. What I don't like is trying to make too close a comparison of intelligence. Intelligence isn't just one thing, it's a whole web of interrelated abilities and proclivities.
