Georgia School Tries to Silence Teen Who Exposed Covid Health Risks

A Georgia teen recently went viral after she published a photo on social media of her classmates shoulder to shoulder shuffling to their next classes with no masks on or any form of social distancing. Pre-pandemic, this type of scene wouldn't have raised a single eyebrow, but given the current raging health crisis in the US and around the world, more than a few people took umbrage with either the teen or the school's handling of re-opening in person classes. As a result of the picture blowing up on social media and running on the news, the teen was swiftly suspended.

The teen, who was one of the few wearing a mask to her classes, wanted to point out that there was essentially nothing being done to protect either students or faculty from the Coronavirus. The school in response said that there was no way that they could mandate mask wearing, followed by saying the scene she photographed was allegedly just a quick few seconds of students transferring and not reflective of daily operations, and claimed falsely that students would have to spend at least 15 minutes with other student/staff in order to get infected with the virus. They also said the teen was suspended because it is written in their student code of conduct that students cannot use social media while in school/class.

To be fair to the school, mask wearing was not being enforced in the area where the school was located, so in that respect, the school wasn't doing anything wrong per se, however there are glaringly obvious errors in the way all of this was handled. No school can simply ignore this virus if they intend to have in person classes because the virus won't ignore them! And the proof is in the pudding because a couple days after the image was posted:

The Georgia high school that was featured in a viral photo showing students packed tightly in a hallway was closed temporarily after nine students and staff members tested positive for the coronavirus, CBS Atlanta affiliate WGCL-TV reports. Students will be informed if they can return for in-person learning on Tuesday night, the letter stated. The letter also noted the building will be "thoroughly cleaned and disinfected" while the school is shuttered.

Not only was the student vindicated in her glaringly obvious concerns for the health and safety of herself and her school mates, but the school also let her know that she was no longer suspended and they regretted any harm that this had caused her. Free speech advocates have pointed out that they will be investigating whether the school has ever actually taken any suspension measures such as this towards other teens posting to social media if what was posted was super positive (does the "law" apply towards all).

The teens concerns have also been validated by several other in person schools that have started back up across the country where over and over again, we are seeing waves of viral outbreaks that have forced a lot of these schools and extra curricular activities to shut back down again and go towards stay at home learning. I will repeat, the virus DOES NOT care if you want to get back to life as normal, or how rich you are, or what race you are, or where you live----it's goal is to infect and keep on infecting and nothing will ever improve or allow mass gathering activities if we don't take serious safety precautions such as mask wearing, hand sanitizers, smaller classes, temperature scans, open air classes, desk or face shields for students/teachers, social distancing, staggered entry and exit times, no lunches in mass, and not allowing close contact activities if no protection can be worn.

My own local school district will not be opening for a few months and/or until local Covid numbers have gone down, and will be constantly assessing local risks to students/parents/teachers. Even if they re-open in a few months, they have given parents the option to then continue to home school if they desire also in preparation for a potential re-opening in a few months, each school has been shipped plenty of PPE and hand sanitizer for both students/staff.

Well did the school have any kind of protocol? Like did they have custodial staff cleaning down work places everyday or even between classes?

I know that right now for my public schools they plan to continue with the online learning. I believe they said something about splitting up classes so like the first half of the day a portion of the class will attend school. And then the second half of the day the other students will attend.

Doing half days and cutting down the amount of students entering schools I think is a good idea. I'm not sure about how it's going to be executed, but it will help with the social distancing issue.

Cause as we all know schools are tight spaces especially when everyone is moving around trying to get to their classroom.

I believe the school did say custodial staff was cleaning, however, we all know that alone isn't enough and that will hardly help if a student who is infected is going class to class and the cleaning staff simply aren't enough and aren't able to clean all day, every seat, every classroom between students which is the reality. It takes far more effort like the things you mention, plus things like pre-screening for things like temperature at the door, social distancing, etc.

Legally speaking it may be impossible for the school district to enforce mask wearing if there is no legal requirement from the state of Georgia to force people to wear masks while in public. So in that regard it is difficult to blame the school district. As for her getting suspended it may be within the school districts right to do so if she did indeed violate their policy.

As stated above, yes, there was no requirement by the district and they did have policy on book about not using social media in school, however, if you are legally forced to go to school as it is considered an act of truancy to not attend school, and your literal health is not being protected, I think you absolutely in this case, have a right to ask what is going to be done to protect myself, my friends, and my family. I also do not fully believe the school is equally enforcing the social media policy because if she had posted an image of her teacher with the caption, my teacher is awesome, I seriously doubt the school would have ever even batted an eye, much less suspended her in the swift manner that they did.

I wanted to add this point, but this was already pretty long, but absolutely. I went to one of the strictest high schools when it came to dress code. Everything from our hair length, to mandatory belts, to the type and brand of shoes we were allowed to wear was regulated and so this idea that NOW, all of a sudden when IT IS LITERALLY LIFE AN DEATH we're talking about, they can't seem to somehow figure out how to mandate wearing masks or social distancing is absolute and complete BS of the highest degree. I don't live in Georgia, but the mayor of our city literally just conferred with the govenor, and all of a sudden masks were mandatory for everyone. Just like that. Not only that, as mentioned, if schools do actually go back up and running, they've already pre-distributed masks/sanitizer for all students in our huge school district, so I mean, don't get up there and say "oh nothing can possibly be done." This is gonna be the last time I'm gonna respond, it's no point arguing with a pink anon, you can even look on the box of masks and has a disclaimer it can't prevent covid. The only "masks" that would prevent covid is either a respirator or gas mask. The generic cloth masks are basically a placebo. There are cheap disposable respirator type masks found typically at your local hardware store, those will work, however reusing them constantly would defeat the purpose when it comes to covid.

And you need proof that social distancing is better than masks? You're not around the person who has covid, how dense can you be anon.

The only way to really prevent covid is a healthy diet (studies are showing probiotics/primarily pickled cabbage can help prevent) vitamin D, a good immune system, but most importantly social distancing and hygiene, PPE if you absolutely have to.

This is true for a lot of teens, but not all as recent cases have shown. As Lumos said, these kids go home to grandma's, people with pre-existing conditions, those far more susceptible to the virus. One man alone recently infected some 90 people. You also forget it's not just kids that attend school, it's the teaching staff, the custodial staff, the cafe staff, volunteers, security, etc. Their lives should be a priority just as much as the kids themselves.

But to truly be accurate you also have to disregard any cases of comorbitity, ie if someone in thier 80s does of covid that dosent realy count because they were dying anyway covid just happened to be the catalyst. Or if someone who had heart or lung complications prior to contracting covid again thats not to be counted since it required a combination of both covid and the preexisting condition. So these people saying it's a 3% fatality rate are also waaaay off base.
Factoring out just the elderly covid had about a 0.1% to 0.3% fatality rate. Again just about identical to the seasonal flu

We are not talking about an adult photographer uninvited or even an adult snapping pics of students and using them in any salacious way. There is no expectation of privacy in a crowded public school hallway. There is no reasonable claim that these sorts of photos are violating anyone's legal right to privacy, especially given that the photo was shot from behind. The school only banned students using social media during school hours, which is what the actual suspension was for, but when a student is contesting their own health and safety or that of others, one can and in this case, DID, make a case about their right to expose the school.

Case in point, if your child's teacher started to hit him in class and a student filmed it and posted it, I gather you wouldn't say, it was wrong to film that incident, as it would very much be evidence in a court case against said teacher even if the students face was fully shown in the video or images, and the same goes here. Days later after this teen reported this, nearby schools have seen soaring cases of Corona virus cases and many have had to shutter their doors. She did not post this for the hell of it or for her Insta, it was to serve as warning that was very much needed. If we don't allow students like her to stand up for themselves when their are potential risks to themselves or others, we are asking to be willing participants in defending, in this case, the schools, "right" to silence them.
