some places let their workers wear pants without pockets. (leggings, capris, yoga pants, etc.) so the apron has a few on it. to keep things like a pen and small notepad.
typically only the people who deal with the raw or cooked foods directly. are the ones required to wear them by law or store policy however.
also depending on what their doing in the store. if they get their clothes dirty that can't just stop to get changed. but if they have an apron on it can be switched out. in about a minute or less in most cases.
I call them skirts. I wear one because it has pockets I can put a pen , my box cutter, and a note book in. Since I am 3rd shift , I really don't have wear one, only when customers are present. There are customers between 10 pm to 1 AM and between 6 AM to 6:30 AM when I get off. They also keep clothes from getting crap on them.

My mother told me that it was to hide inappropriate erections when they look at all of the housewives
But don't aprons bend like cloths? Even boners pass through sheets. But i've also heard it is used for pilferage
hmmm, Could mother be wrong? Maybe its a little of both
Grocery store uniform, just so everyone who works there looks the same and stands out from the customers.
Other grocery stores wear ID with a thick and bright color sling and their polos and blouses has a big logo print at the back. So it made me think. Staffs in a department store don't wear aprons yet they still stand out.
so they can stand out in the crowd its a uniform
I guess so. But still pointless if you think about it. Staffs in department stores don't wear aprons.
@Aiko_E_Lara I seen them in Walmart, Shop Rite, Stop and Shop, CVS, etc.
Sure and I know some groceries that don't wear aprons. Makes me think it's not necessary to be a uniform
Incase they get covered in cheese.
So they don't get shit all over their clothes
And explain how they get messy? If cashiers handle dirty money a lot then why don't bank tellers wear aprons?
Yet they don't wear gloves and masks along with it. Talking about before the covid though.
I see gloves can be compulsory but I still see many grocery stores with staffs not wearing any aprons.
Oh and bank tellers dont wear gloves as well
