How do I explain to strangers that I’m an author?

Jennifer, I think you are worrying to much about the job think. You should tell the person: "I am a published author, I am working on my next book." You have stated you are working. they may or may not be interested in what you write about or may or may not be interested in you. One day soon tell me about what you write about, I would be interested.
Guys are usually more attracted to feminine features, happiness, and kindness than employment. Anyway, just say you’re an author. You don’t have to list your paychecks for anyone.

Probably have to keep it simple for simple minded people.
I would not tell people your dreams or goals of the future. Tell them the jobs you did in the past, the colleges you are looking into.
In order to be at their level you have to try and find a hourly job that compares to what you do.
If you have books that you have written you can tell them that, but you don’t want most people to know while your writing a book unless its the next series, since they usually say that will never sell and why not write on this instead. You usually have to keep it to people you trust that respect your decisions and choices.
okay- I think that guys are more interested whether or not you are an interesting person with a good heart and a sense of humor. I doubt anyone really cares if you have good health insurance.
The truth is that, it depends what group in ur social circles u talk to. Books aren't looked as the way u look at them. It's a small percentage.
Sounds like a lot of questions here
I recommend getting off of this site
