What can I expect in Montreal as a Dutch exchange student?

I will go on exchange to Montreal soon from Amsterdam and I wanted to ask what I can expect there. How are the people? Are they approachable? Is it easy to make friends with people and create a social circle? People in the Netherlands are usually quite distant which is why I am asking this. Would they be open to spend time with foreigners?

How would I approach this situation? How is going out in Montreal? How is the dating life?

Coming from Amsterdam, you will be a little disoriented because of its similarity with the US, at least the modern Montreal.

However, I suggest you go to Old Montreal, the old town as it is now build by the French during the time of De Maisonneuve and before the English took over.

Old Montreal is a very nice place to roam around and there are a lot of pubs and places where to meet other people and locals alike. The Canadians are very open and you will basically have no problem making friendships.

However, I would urge you to keep clear of the linguistic problem as by now, Montreal is dominated by the French speaking. Do not get involved with this rather very delicate problem of the Quebec Province.

Montreal can be very cold in Winter due to its location among bodies of water.

If you go to Montreal to date and to try to get into women's pants, as your main aim to be in Montreal suggests, then I would not recommend you attempt this trick because of the proximity of the US and the potential legal issue you could be faced.

Just be a good student and learn what you came to Montreal to do and forget about fornicating.

Thank you for your answer! Two questions. What do you mean exactly by "not getting involved with the linguistics problem"? And secondly, I'm sorry if I gave off the impression that my main objective was to sleep with as many girls as possible or something, which is totally not my intention. I've just never really been outside the Netherlands for an extended period of time and thus never got to meet other girls and thus I find it interesting how they would be like in Montreal and what I can expect with regards to their customs and values in terms of dating. I am a guy in his early twenties so dating is kind of a big deal for me at this stage of my life.

Since a number of years, the conflict between French and English speaking citizens in Montreal has escalated. In general, the French speaking Montrealers will reluctantly speak English and if you have to go to a hospital, be ready to speak in French if you would like to receive an adequate treatment because otherwise, you may be misunderstood as hospital staff tend not to speak (or want to speak) English.

Don't try to get sides when Montrealers get into a discussion about the language problem. Taking sides is never good as a foreigner.

I understand that dating is important to you but if you can avoid to approach women without being asked, do it because in North America, you may be in trouble for "harassing" women if you approach them with the obvious purpose to want something from them.
