Did you ever have the job opportunity of a lifetime but did not have the background or training to capitalize on it?

I had that opportunity with Fluor Engineering and Construction, in Irvine California, and had just gotten my Masters Degree from Pepperdine, University. After weighing in on the job, and the requirement/responsibilities, I soon realized that I did not have the credentials and experience that I really needed to move ahead with the organization. I stayed there for 5 years and made the best of what I could, but mercifully I was vested in profit sharing and bought my home with the investiture that I had.

Anyone find themselves in that position?

Did you really want to move ahead with the job? Were you OK with what you did there for 5 years? Just curious.

Thanks for the interesting and thoughtful reply. As a matter of fact, I LOVED what I did there and it was the BEST experience of my working career to date. If you are familiar with Fluor Engineering, they were and still are one of the top engineering companies in the world. I had an opportunity to go to Saudi Arabia and work on the Saudi Petrochemical project, and declined to go, and, of course regretted it to this day, as it would have expanded my work experience tremendously.
