Can I go to a job interview with shorts?

My mom has told me that I shouldn’t go to job interviews with shorts on but with with pants, because it’s unprofessional with shorts, is it true?

It depends on the job. If you're trying to get hired as a pool operator then okay, but with a nice shirt, preferably tucked in.

If it's a law firm, better have at least a coat and tie.

Good on you for asking the question. In general, correct, shorts are not good for an interview. The lesson here is to do your research: go to the business and just watch the employees and clients as they go in and out. Dress for your interview at least as well as the other employees and in a similar style.

You certainly wouldn't want to go to a job interview wearing shorts. Even if the job was being a lifeguard or working in a surfboard shop. It is just way too casual and the interviewer probably would think that you weren't taking it seriously.

Yeah, for the most part that will be true. You want to look professional even if it means dressing beyond what the job requires. The only things that I would say okay wear shorts would be if you were trying to get some outdoorsy job where that is the attire or like a lifeguard lolz. Interviews don't typically last long so suck it up for a short time and then change back into shorts.

True story. I went to a job interview where people in the room were wearing shorts and other casual clothes. I was dressed nicely. It turns out I was the one who got the job. If you can't dress nicely to an interview, they figure you really aren't interested and would not take it seriously if they did hire you.

Absolutely not. Shorts are way too casual even if they're tailored. It's required to wear a suit or whatever suits the job you are applying for. For e. g., if it is retail, put together an outfit from the store you're applying at. If it's for a cafe, smart-casual is best. Never shorts!

It depends on the type of job - but I think the general advice is to dress like someone who already has that job.

Its not very important, but might as well not make a bad impression if you don't have to.

Whatever you wear, make sure is clean and neat and you are clean and hair combed. Looking disheveled gives the subconscious impression that you might be sloppy in work as well. Looking neat is never bad and sometimes good.

Both over dressing and under dressing are bad for a job interview. When my uncle needed a job as a new Canadian immigrant with no Canadian job references in his field of study, he showed up for a general labour interview in a suit and tie and the boss sent him home as soon as he arrived cause he looked too good to be a labourer.

That's extremely true. The interview is your chance to make a good impression. Why would you want to give them the impression that you think their company is the kind of place you wouldn't need to dress reasonably well for?
