It's not unusual for a new software engineer to make $120-150,000 a year in the Bay Area, BUT the cost of living is also incredibly high. Silicon Valley area studio apartments are $4000 per month, with one-bedroom apartments closer to $5000 per month. You almost certainly need a car - California isn't set up for walking and public transportation is terrible. It's quite possible to make $150,000 a year and barely be getting by.

Some guys will buy a small RV and park it in the company parking lot and live that way while they save money. Others will share a small apartment with another person. And others live further away where rents are lower and commute several hours a day.

If you are good, you will get raises and improve your lifestyle, but don't be fooled by the high salary initially - the high cost of living eats most of it up.

Sure thing. If you got one of these jobs, there are always going to be ways where you can live more inexpensively and save more of the money, but you have to be willing to sacrifice, at least for the first couple of years. Most people want to live more comfortably, and so they tend to spend every penny they make, and end up just as "poor" as other people despite the higher salary.

Someone with good experience, can get 10-12K per month. Average is less than that.

By the way, I'm one of those people who hate the term software engineer, since they are not engineers. As far as I know they don't take a single engineering class in college.

Actually my friend I'm one of those people but im my college we take some of engineering classes, maybe they're only the basics but all of our job requires the whole understanding of engineering. In other hand if it doesn't require it then it's not a software engineering it's only software coding.

None of those are engineering classes.

Pretty much all engineers will take at least two years of math starting at calculus level. They will also take a bunch of physics since engineering is a branch of physics. Depending on the university, the physics will probably be calculus based, which means people can't take it until their second year.

Then they will start taking some engineering classes. Regardless of their specialty, they will take statics and dynamos, strength of materials and similar classes. By around their third year they will finally start taking classes in their specialty. Everything before that is common to all engineers regardless of their specialty.
