Have you ever just stopped showing up to a job?

No two weeks notice or anything. Just stopped going.

I’ve worked in the food industry for a minute now, both fast food and restaurants. It has a very high turnover rate. It’s very common for people to just stop showing up. Even after they’ve only worked a single shift.

i wish I could do that lol… I’ve been tempted a couple times. I would just feel too bad not giving proper notice.

Well our system is different than in the United States but my anecdote is similar, when I wanted to start a business of my own. I spoke to my boss about it and having to leave, I had been working there for about 6 years and brought him loads of English speaking clients through the years. Originally he was happy for me, it quickly turned sour though when he realized how difficult it was going to be to replace me, tried getting a few guys I knew to apply but he wasn’t offering them enough money and trying to get them to work more hours than me which made no sense to me. Where I live 1 month notice is supposedly mandatory, nothing really happens if you don’t but you can’t get unemployment or access to government schemes and since there are a lot it would be a shame. Anyhow We agreed on a 3 month notice which allowed me to get what we call amicable leave, he would have to pay me about an extra 9000 euros than if I had just left. after a week I realised the paperwork I had signed was not the right one and had no judicial value, I asked him to sign the correct one and he went cold. He said he’d look into it after insisting he said he would give me an answer by lunch. At 1:00pm he said it’s not happening. I immediately applied for a government scheme to get unemployment while I build my business, went on paid sick leave for 3 months and then returned for 4hours before leaving again for more paid sick leave until the paperwork was sorted out. Then I gave him the ultimatum, I can continue on paid sick leave until he’s forced to fire me in which case I would still get that 9000 euros he didn’t want to give or he could let me leave with a discharge of notice.
He chose to let me go which meant I could get my unemployment for a maximum of two years allowing me to pay for my mortgage and living expenses, any money I made from my business went towards the business. That was the one and only time I did something similar if he had been honest and correct with me none of this would have happened, life for you ✌️

Just once about 10 years ago. I was really struggling financially so I picked up a second job. Both jobs were physically demanding and it was wearing me down. It didn't seem worth it to be working 60 or more hours a week and not an hour of it was overtime, but more importantly my physical condition just kept getting worse and I didn't have enough time to rest and recover.

One day I got home from my first job (my full time job) and took a short nap. My alarm went off and I got up and started getting ready for my second job, but I realized that I just didn't have anything left in me. I was fatigued and soar all over and I decided I am just not going in. It didn't even cross my mind to call my boss at the time. I just plopped back in bed and immediately fell back asleep. Afterwards it just felt awkward to reach out to my boss of job two. He never called me either. I guess he just assumed that I quit.

Yup. Three times in fact.

First time- call center that was eating my soul. It was... just... fuck. They really told me since I missed so many days (i lied on most of them) that I need to cough up those excuses. "We'll see you tomorrow with the excuses." ... I sat in the bathroom and put my key card on the back of the door and dipped.

Second time- I was doing this easy job but the thing was it was TOO EASY. Like a monkey could do it. As long you didn't do drugs, they got a seat for you. Well, mofos didn't pay me on time. And when I don't get paid, you bet your ass I'm not just gonna keep coming in. Aaand they fired me because they couldn't own up to their mistake.

Third time- Again, where's my gawd damn money? HR just didn't tell me that when I actually start working, they would give payment by check. They didn't do it the first time so... sigh.

I did at a volunteer job that I had in highschool, it was part of my vocational studies. The school told me that I only had to work there for 1 term (roughly 3 months). So after that term finished, I stopped going. 2 months later the head of my school year growled me for not showing up to the job anymore. I pointed out to them that I’d only been assigned 1 term, and it was even written in my contract/form for the job, but they still denied it and I was given 2 weeks of detention 🙄

I only ever worked at 3 jobs in my whole working career. The first two were just stepping stones to the third and last one. That I retired from after four decades.
I had to give short notices on both of my early jobs because the next one was only open for a short time.
The first two close a few years after I moved on. So it was a good thing!

Iv'e never had such a job, when i can just not show up. Impossible. If i were to not show up at a job, they would immediately assume i am sick or something happened to me so they would start investigating and looking for me.

No, I've always given notice. Don't get me wrong some of the business owners were real asses, but I usually had a good rapport with coworkers and could not dump my workload on them.

No, I've never done that. I've always given my 2 weeks notice as a courtesy.

Yes I'm 23 and had over 12 jobs. Moved around the country and expiremented with jobs

Yeah. I hated one, the people i worked with. So, I just stopped. I know now you can't do that
