Are most high schools in USA without a uniform as movies portray?

Not sure. My city makes all the public school and private schools wear uniforms. But its two different styles. We only got like 1 day every few months that we could wear whatever we wanted

Private mostly wears blouses/ties/skirts/button downs and plaid colors. Girls normally have to wear a skirt

Public mostly wears polos/shorts/pants. Only a certain length of skirts are acceptable but most girls wear pants like guys

And yes we had to wear uniforms kindergarten through 12th grade/senior year. Hated it but its still ongoing at all schools here except for one who always set their own rules

@ArrowheadSW i just read that 20% of public schools in the US mandated a uniform policy. But yea i feel my state is 100%

Most public schools do not have uniforms and most private schools do have uniforms. The majority of children attend public schools.
