It's more so who you know, if you fit a specific image they want to sell, and if you sign a deal with the devil... Talent or business cards don't have much to do with it. I grew up around a bunch of talented individuals. One got an interview with Sony Music Entertainment due to who his father knew. They liked his music, but he didn't fit the image they were looking to sell at the time so they sent him on his way. He ended up stabbed to death a couple years later when he went a different way with his life. Another guy I grew up with knew a sound a music producer/sound engineer that did work for a number of people in hip-hop. For example as kids we had all the beats to Slick Rick's The Art of Storytelling before Slick Rick even had them. Later they would be used for that album on the Def Jam label. That friend used his industry connections to try to get in. They liked his music, but again not the image. Who you know gets you the interview. If you match the image they want to market as product then maybe you get a chance. If you make a few deals with the devil, then you're probably a well known star even if you have ghost writers that create all your lyrics and you auto tune your voice and lip sink at concerts. Hollywood sells images and carries out rituals. They don't pick the best talent. The industry is corrupt from top to bottom. Be careful what you wish for.
When did they ever do that?
Yeah man
