Is it reasonable to assume I probably will not get this job?

I am a web app developer with close to 4 years of professional experience. I am mid-to-senior level.

There is a role that I was a top candidate for. It pays the top 5% salary in the entire company, but comes with a shit load of responsibility.

The recruiter called me Thursday, Sept. 26 to tell me the good news. Sadly, it is Tuesday, Sept. 8, and I have not heard any positive updates. I sent some material off for review the day of the phone call.

Do you think at this point they are focusing more on other candidates?

To make sure I get this right, the recruiter called you on Sep 26 and you haven't heard anything on Oct 8 ...
If you are working with an independent recruiter, this may mean nothing. The recruiter may be negotiating their fee for finding you, which can take time for the company to get the appropriate internal approvals. If this is the case, suggest you call the recruiter and request a status update.
Do not give up... yet. And best of luck. If this isn't the job, another one will be. Despite what people say about AI, your skills are needed in the industry.

  I would assume nothing tbh. If your recruiter is doing their job, it doesn’t matter if this job is considering you or not, they’ll find another fit for you. Let them work
