I can usually do with rude and disrespectful patients but tonight was different cause this lady was with it well enough to know she was being rude, the first night she was here she was sassy but it was kind of funny. The second night I guess the evening aide took her into the bathroom and she was connected to an IV which you’d have to take the pole with into the BR.
Anyways, I asked her if we could use the commode this time since I had it ready. And she said “fine”. So I was helping her on the commode and she starts taking off her pad and I was afraid she was going to fall cause she’s weak on the left side. And then I’m putting a new pad on her and she’s like “I can’t pee with you sitting there doing that”. She was just being so rude and then she was like “they will be hearing about this”.
Now I’m worried she’s going to make up some sort of lie about me to my boss. I don’t even know if I want to work in this type of field anymore. She didn’t even say thank you, she was so rude. Like I said I can deal with confused patients and combative patients but when they are this rude and mean it makes me hard to have empathy for them. Maybe this is my last day here, I’ll probably have DHS showing up to my door. I told the nurse that I don’t think I want to go back in there. And the nurse was understanding and said she’d go in there.
I’ve been working as a CNA for almost 7 years, and I try hard to give the best and effective care for patients. And maybe since I’m this sensitive I shouldn’t be working here but I usually have thick skin.
I’ll probably lose my job?

Hey girl, don't panic just yet! Based on your track record, I really doubt you'll lose your job over this one rude patient. A few thoughts:
- Talk to your boss/nurse manager calmly and objectively explain your side. Emphasize you were just trying to help properly, not do anything wrong.
- Ask if they can review your other patient interactions/feedback. I'm sure they'll see you usually provide great care.
- Suggest the patient may be extra difficult/confused right now due to illness/meds, so not to take her complaints too seriously without context.
- Nursing home jobs are tough, but you've lasted 7 years - that shows you're excellent at what you do. Don't let one grumpy lady chase you away!
- Take some deep breaths. With your experience, they'd be silly to fire you without a clear reason. Stay positive.
Chin up! I'm sure if you communicate professionally, they'll understand. No sense stressing until you have to. You've got this - you're great at your job and people there know that. Try not to overthink it for now. It'll work out, I just know it!
Well good news you won't lose your job and as a rn nurse patients often do this to us! Just being rude and cruel because they can. We get a lot of homeless here wild people and they try everything to hurt you. Because they can and get happy from it.
This is the worst job cause no matter what we say corporate heads believe the patient. Never mind the 400 hundred who said I was amazing and so helpful.
If you want to quit and know you did your best and way more rude and awful people await you there.
We love and adore our cnas but since COVID they never give us any! Hate them for it. We can't do our job cause we can't do every little dumb thing or healthy care need for 7 patients without your needed help.
That person is crazy and just wants to hurt you come on you can weather through them.
This last week got a crazy patient been there for 2 months. Danger to himself and every one and no place will take him. My crazy nurse friend thinks he is harmless and let him off. Had to baby sit him and during the night he stabbed the cna because he wanted to.
Rushed him to the ER tied the bastard down and he is screaming how he will say I raped him and touched him constantly through his stay how id be fired he would say anything to get me ruined.
You didn't injure her. I expect you will be fine.
