Do you think studying all weekend for exams is a lame excuse to not go out and have fun?

We asked our friend if she wanted to hang out for a couple hours today and she said she can’t because she needs to study for midterm exams. We told her it was only for a couple hours and then she can get back into it. She said her midterm is on Monday and plus she works 40 hours a week and takes a night class.
I told her, “I understand but even if the hang out is only two or three hours, you can get back into it. You can still come. Plus you had all this week to study.”

She insisted that she study and she had other assignments to do and submit.

I told her okay that’s fine. She misses out on a party last night because she did assignments. My friend said, “You still could have went! The party was only two hours. Live a little.

We understand education goes first but you can still take a break. You don’t need a WHOLE weekend to study! Like 10 hours a day? Who studies ALL WEEKEND?

Well obviously yes, balance would be better. But I don't know her situation and perhaps to get that qualification it does necessitate that behaviour.

I studied for a qualification while I worked full time. And let me tell you, it was really shit. The stress is relentless, and you know that you should be more balanced. But you start thinking to yourself, well, if I work hard on Saturday, then I can have Sunday off. Or you can't chill on Saturday because you're thinking you have so much to do on Sunday. In the end you can't win. You end up so stressed and you have no energy for actually enjoying anything anyway. Unfortunately it doesn't quite work like that where you can just compartmentalise work and play, and immediately switch off. The stress gets into your bones.

I would not take her behaviour personally.

I didn’t see her on Instagram or social media at all but she still could have taken a couple of hours to hang with us. I mean you’re right. Nobody studies ALL DAMN WEEKEND!

Not at all. She works full time (40 hours!) and needs time to study. I think she’s the only responsible one in your group and she has her priorities straight. Sure going out would only take a couple hours but then she’s got to come home and try to get her mind back on track for studying, not to mention if she drinks alcohol at the party then she won’t be in a clear state of mind to study afterwards, so it’s more hassle than it’s worth. I think that the rest of the group, including you, are pretty crap friends for trying to convince her to go repeatedly after she said no for a valid reason.

Maybe getting a good grade on an important mid-term is important to attain the goals she is working toward. Certainly more important than partying with "friends" who don't seem to care if she succeeds.

I guess you didn't go to college, or if you did you studied something like gender studies or underwater basket weaving. Typically many students in real degrees study all day and night for days on end for mid terms. When all the tests are complete and the assignments are in, then they relax for the next couple of weeks and then start over again.

We’re not laughing at her. We kept telling her she could take a break and hang out with us but she said no. If she has time to take breaks she has time to hang with us. I understand her grade is important but talking breaks is important too. She didn’t want to come out but whatever.

If studying allows you to get a better grade, then yes it is a very good excuse. One I have used many times myself.

I can tell you that when I have sat down to study particularly for important exams, I will study for 3 or 4 hours and then take a break for an hour or two and then go right back to it. What I don't do ever is take what I would call a recreational break like for instance going out and spending an hour surfing or even picking up my guitar and spending an hour playing music. I don't do these things because it breaks the routine of studying and thinking too severely and Even if I promise myself to go back to my studying, when I try to do so, it becomes a very unpleasant and difficult task. It's important to get into the routine of things completely and this is why I think your friend said that they were going to study for the whole weekend.
