I mean I understand she’s autistic and shy but she could at least say good morning to me. She does to some other teachers and gives them huge but with me, she avoids eye contact. I work as a teacher assistant in a special education classroom. She’s not one of my students. She used to be until she moved up.
Like when her two girl pals hug some teachers they adore she hugs them too, but when they hug me, she won’t come over. She never comes near me or walks with the girls when they walk with me. With some other teacher, she will.
When I wave, smile or say hi, she will give me the side eye and turn her head away from me. Doesn’t do it back. The other staff she does. I don’t know what I did. I’ve always been sweet to her. I know I called her out for her behavior but whatever. Is it my intimidating height? I’m 5’11, plus size 20/22W, 245lbs and not that pretty. I’m average looking. Most of the female teachers are 5’7 and under. That I work with.
Honestly it hurts. I thought most students would adore me but it hurts that one or a few doesn’t like me. I’m autistic too and I can relate. Some kids I adore but they prefer the other teacher over me. It’s fine but still. She always turns her head away every time she seems me or give me a glare. Man that hurts

Navigating relationships with autistic students can be challenging. It's crucial to understand that their reactions might not be personal. Everyone has different comfort levels and preferences. Continue to be kind, consistent, and patient. Sometimes, offering small gestures or activities she enjoys might help bridge the gap. Your presence is valued, even if it's not immediately visible. Keep showing warmth and understanding. In time, she may warm up to you, or perhaps find her own unique way of interacting with you. Stay patient and open-hearted, as connections can evolve over time.
