I'm not feeling very well lately, there are some problems, I passed A2 English but I haven't studied for a few days, should I wait a little longer to study or should I stop postponing? I promised myself that I would learn English this year, but I haven't been able to learn for months. I've tried a lot, but learning is very difficult for me. I've memorized a lot of words, but I'm hopeless.
Learning a foreign language is more than the sum of words to memorize, or knowing which way to put them together in a sentence. It will take time, there are no shortcuts. I was lucky to have been brought up in a bilingual family, then added English from high school (12+) all the way to university, where I got my degree in translation. I then added a fourth language, studied it and perfected it by moving abroad.
You could alternate you study with listening to songs. Listen to a song in English several times, try and figure out the meaning and then look up the lyrics. You could read easy books or bilingual books, if they exist in your language pair (native language to English). Try and find native English speakers in your home country, who might want to learn your native language too. Keep it fun and see it as a way of socializing, interchanging views, not study. The best way to learn a language is by using it. Don't be afraid to make a few mistakes.
I have been teaching English and French to many people, some of them were young children. Motivation is key and that's where you seem te be stuck. Don't give up, it will be a gradual process.
If in doubt, you can send me a direct message.

You should not wait longer to study. You should keep going. Even if its gone slower than you hoped... studying more is the way to go. It's not hopeless, it's just not going as quickly as you'd hoped. But the trick is to keep doing a bit, everyday, (just a bit).
Where you are right now: it will get harder and harder to START studying again, the longer you wait. If you're discouraged... that's a recipe for you... never learning English. This is how people give up on something like that. You get discouraged, so you stop doing it as often. Then at some point you haven't done it for a while... and are still discouraged. Then it takes so much more effort to start back up again. Most people don't. They just say "forget learning English altogether" it's too hard, or too much work.
Keep studying, you will get there, if you keep walking down the road. You will not get there, if you take too long of a break.

Take it easy. I am bilingual and I know what it's like to have to learn a language you've never spoken before from scratch. My advice to you is to build a consistent routine and study in small doses. Even just 10-15 minutes per day or even 3 times a week is more than enough. It's important to give yourself a break when you need it because your brain can suffer a burnout meaning that if you keep pushing yourself to study even when you're not 100% could make so that nothing sinks in.

If you feel you know whatever you're going to need to know, then take a deep breath and stop postponing. There's no point to it.
But if you don't feel that you're well versed with what you need to know, then keep studying arduously till you feel ready. Give it 3-4 months of extra studying.00 Reply

Feeling overwhelmed is normal; learning a language requires patience and persistence. Take small steps: set achievable goals to help maintain motivation. Choose engaging materials like books, songs, or movies in English to make learning enjoyable. Consistency is key, even if it’s only a few minutes daily. Practice speaking with someone or use language apps. Remember, progress takes time, and feeling discouraged is part of the journey. Reflect on why you started and celebrate small victories. Keep going at your own pace, and be kind to yourself.

Good for you @red-lipstick-girl you're an inspiration to me. I'm moving to another country (Portugal) in a few months and having lived in Sweden for 11 years I am still hopeless at Swedish and everyone here speaks excellent English. However, there's no harm in taking a break now and again and practicing your skills here and elsewhere so the learning doesn't end. Take a break and learn when you are in a good mindset because the motivation will return when you WANT to do this so best learning is achieved.

You should continue even if you're hitting a learning curve.. Maybe start watching English shows and movies with since I've seen that watching something in another language seems to help quite a bit.. Since I know that you have to know how to speak the language or know how the words work..
10 Reply That sounds like you're dealing with some depression and discouragement. That must be really difficult.
If you stop, then you definitely will not learn English. That's the only guarantee you have. But if you keep going, even if it is really fifficult and slow, then you will learn English.
What about changing the way you're doing it? Let's start listening to songs and try to memorize them or watch some English television without subtitles?10 ReplyMy first question would be, And I am not trying to pry, Evaluate the severity of the illness.
