If you are a teacher instead have you ever shamed a student, and this doesn't have to be viewed as a negative, because it could be just pointing out whether a student was wrong or right, did you regret doing so?

Great question. While not all professors have big egos or misuse power, some certainly do. Academia can attract people who enjoy intellectual authority or social status, and yes — some cross lines, like public shaming, to assert control or dominance.

If you’ve been embarrassed in class, it likely said more about the professor’s insecurity or lack of empathy than your capabilities. A good educator builds students up — they don’t tear them down.

And if you’re the teacher? Self-reflection matters. Even “constructive” criticism should be delivered respectfully and privately when possible. Public humiliation rarely teaches — it just wounds.

You deserve a learning environment built on respect, not power plays. 🎓💬

I don't think they do. I liked all of my professors at University and found them interesting people in their own right. Especially the YETi (a professor with an affectation of saying YET in every sentence that we all noticed and he seemed oblivious of).

With the update, it's NOT about shaming them ONLY using them as an example of what is BAD logic so EVERY student gets the benefit of it but doing so in a compassionate way is my approach. Science teaching NEEDS that as some curiosity is needed and the fear of taking risks is got to be treated so errors can be looked at and laughed at for the right reasons. That way they can maintain their enthusiasm for learning.

We had a language teacher who invented a whole new grammar, with new terms to designate verbs, nouns, pronouns etc. He played it smart, because attending class meant you had to buy the book he wrote and published.

Another one had such a big ego that, instead of teaching, he recorded himself on video, sat in front of the classroom and played the video. No interaction whatsoever, it was basically a monologue and incredibly boring.

When I went into higher education, I've had no problems, perhaps once or twice earlier. I think they are trying to get through the day like us.

But one young guy, he wasn't a teacher as such, and I'd just gone into higher education, and I give him too much respect, and with this sort you need to embarrass them the same way, they are no better than you.

Yes! I had an Economics professor that we would hope for essay type tests because you could never figure out which he wanted in true and false!

Depends on the college, and on the teacher. My college teachers were mostly friendly, but there were some exceptions with big ego.
