For me, true management and respect have nothing to do with rank or title. People respect the rank and title because regulations say they have to, but personal respect is different. Personal respect is built on the small, everyday actions you take, especially when you think no one is watching.

Even as a civilian in cybersecurity management, I am fortunate that only five people on the entire base have the authority to directly override my decisions. I know some would use that kind of power forcefully, but for me it feels like a heavy responsibility. I often tell new team members that it is much easier being a technician. When a tech makes a mistake, it is rarely serious. When I make one, though, I know I can put lives and careers at risk.

Authority can be given. Respect must be earned.
