That's not possible, you take on an enormous amount of liability when you hire someone, and there are myriad federal and state and local laws and regulation you have to comply with, all of which are very complicated and expensive for the employer. There are also taxes at every level that begin to accrue from the moment someone begins on your payroll. Unpaid interns are a separate category of worker which have their own criteria and rules, so picking someone up for a temporary try-out is not an option.

Go to a temp agency which is set up for this kind of thing and you can prove yourself to an employer from there. If they like you they can buy you out from the agency and you become a permanent employee of theirs.

Usually a new employee has a probationary period (90 days when I was working) starting on their first day on the job.
At the end of their probation period, they are either let go or get to keep the job.
It's up to the employees if they are serious and qualified about the job and don't miss any work at all during this period.

No. it would be wasteful, impossible, and stupid to fill jobs based on a random first come first served basis. No private enterprise could afford the resulting mistakes and inefficiency of a process like that.

As a manager, I’d be cautious about giving every qualified applicant a trial run.

- Trial/project for finalists: paid work sample or short contract only for the top few. Clear goals, feedback, and criteria.
- Respect team capacity: too many trials overwhelm staff, confuse culture, and slow decisions.

I’d favor selective, well‑designed trials, not automatic trials for everyone who meets minimum qualifications.

As one who does own a business (restaurant/bar) I get applications daily and obviously only if we needed help could they be hired. It does take a special person to be able to be good serving food and drinks in a very busy atmosphere as we have.
