Normally I am a huge fan of SpongeBob and I thought the first movie was awesome. However, This movie was mixed for me. I thought it was going to be better than it really was. There were some good things about it, but there were also some things I did not really like. So let's get to the simple plot of the story.
The plot like most of the show and the first movie is Plankton trying to steal the Krabby Patty Formula. But upon the land a Pirate named Burger Beard actually keeps changing the story around with a magic pen. Eventually the Bikini Bottom townspeople including Patrick accuse Spongebob and Plankton of collusion to steal he formula, when really the formula just vanished into thin air. The town of Bikini Bottom goes into chaos as everybody goes anarchy and destroys the town (Plus Mr. Krabs wears BDSM gear). Spongebob and Plankton must travel back in time to get the formula and restore Bikini Bottom back to normal. So they build a time machine and go back to the past 4 days to retrieve it.
They go back to present day Bikini bottom and it turns out Plankton and Spongebob grabbed the fake formula paper that Plankton had originally made to be a fooled you note. Then the townspeople take Spongebob to be executed, but before the rock can crush Spongebob Mr. Krabs can smell Krabby patties cooking. so the major characters all go to find where the smell is. It unfortunately is on dry land. So the 5 main characters go on dry land to discover that Burger Beard is the real villain as he is using the formula to make burgers aboard his food truck He then writes them out to exile on an island.
But the cast eventually become superheroes (Squidward is Sour Note, Mr. Krabs is the penny-pincher, Patrick is Mr. Awesomeness, Sandy is The Rodent, and Spongebob is The Bubble Blower). They eventually take to the streets in a chase after Burger Beards food truck. Burger Beard then wipes out our heroes one by one until Plankton as Plank-Ton comes to save the formula. Plankton eventually gives the formula back to Mr. Krabs, and they all return to normal and go home. Yeah that's the plot; it really sucked. The animation was good, the live action scenes were awesome, and the effects were decent. The storyline however is slow building. For the majority of the movie it's just Spongebob and Plankton. Patrick doesn't even get as much screen time as on TV or in the first movie.
Overall, I have to rate the movie 3 out of 5. I am a huge Spongebob fan, but for the budget and time they have put into the second movie it could have been a whole lot better. I know sequels are hardly ever as good as the first time but come on! Even Despicable Me and Toy Story had way better sequels. Needless to say as a Spongebob fan I was actually disappointed by this movie.
