9. Slayer - Raining Blood


the intro is whails and echoes of whammy bar being abused with ambient raindrops or blood dripping, or at least that what it sounds like,
the lyrics are to do with an satanic like entity rising above the purgatory to heaven.

8.Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

From 1970, this haunting riff played around G minor scale and based on a Diminished G chord is truly terrifying.

Geezer Butler and Tommy Iommi were messing around with Diminished G chord, trying to play Gustav Holst, mars.

But then ended up writing this song, the lyrics were inspired by an experience Bassist Geezer Butler had when he borrowed a 16th century black magic book and put pictures of satan up in his room, he then fell asleep and saw a black silhouette at the end of his bed, the result is this song.

From the start the bell chime has a doom laden atmosphere, the lyrics deal with the Cthulhu mythos and cults that worship deities as old as time, the title translates in german as "of unspeakable cults".

this satanic band do not disappoint, brutal death metal at it's scariest once again.

it really starts at 3:42, you can hear a doom laden riff accompained with haunting distant whails of the whammy bar.

4.Bloodbath - Eaten


This one is a little eerie to say the least, the song deals with cannibalism and self-mutilation.

the acoustic diminished arpeggio riff at 2:30 is what makes it so creepy and haunting, the arpeggio riff plays then power chords play on top of it in a diminished interval making a truly scary record.

3.Sunn O))) - Big Church [[megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért]]


The song title is ridiculously long, but this one speaks for itself. The eerie and spooky choir chants with droney downtuned guitars makes this one worthy of this list.

2.Behemoth - Shemhamforash


this one has a creepy atmosphere, but what creepy is the lyrical subject which is to do with the hidden name of Judeo-Christian God, the name שם המפורש (shem hamforash) which is hebrew for the hidden name of god revealed to moses on the tablets.

1.Portal - Curtain


Portal are one of the scariest bands ever, they used 8 string guitars on this song and this album, and use dissonant intervals, diminished fifths and jazz chords, in the midst of heavy onslaught of tremolo picked baritone riffs and dissonance it trances you out.

the lyrics are about the cthulhu mythos and so vague and indecipherable and it's in latin.

Their music can be described as atmospheric and dark and of course, menacingly terrifying .
