This question is about the circle of Fraud. In the Inferno, there are many ways to commit this sin and many punishments for it. Those in this circle are sent to bolgia--the parts of Fraud. I'm asking you which bolgia you think you deserve to be in the most. Which type of fraud here are you the most guilty of?1: Pandering and Seducing. Panderers profit from others' weaknesses, while seducers trick or allure others for their own pleasure. Both sinners are chased and whipped endlessly by demons.
2: Flattery. The sinners in this bolgia praised people excessively and insincerely. These souls will spend eternity submerged in feces. They were full of shit in life, so they are drowning in shit in death.
3: Simony. Simony means "to sell religious and holy things for money." Simonists will spend eternity buried in a hole upside-down, with their feet eternally set on fire.
4: Sorcery, Astrology, and False Prophecy: All of these people used false methods that went against God's law so they could see the future. In this bolgia, they spend eternity with their heads permanently twisted backwards, so they can never see what's ahead of them.
5. Politics. Corrupt politicians spend eternity submerged in boiling tar, representing their "sticky fingers" and dirty business. They are also attacked by demons when they surface.
6: Hypocrisy. Hypocrites are forever doomed to wander this bolgia wearing golden cloaks made of heavy lead, representing their false moral code.
7: Thieves. Thieves spend eternity trapped in a pit full of snakes. Every time the snakes bite them, they are transformed into animals, being robbed of their human form.
8: Liars. Liars' bodies are set on fire forever. The flames are thick enough to hide the sinners' appearances, just like how liars hid the truth in life.
9: Sowers of Discord. People who divided others with their words/teachings are themselves divided, being chopped up by a many-armed, sword-wielding giant demon.
Perhaps hypocrisy, or at least in the perception of others? One constant source of debate I have with a close friend of mine is that I see the world as grey, moral choices as more contextualized rather than driven from a rulebook, and he sees it as black and white and thinks I'm problematic for looking at things in an overly nuanced and grey way. I'm reluctant to judge what appears to be the right course of action without gathering as much information about it as I can, and sometimes I think the only choice left when we do so is to choose the lesser of two or more evils. I think he's convinced that no choice is better when all the choices involve any type of evil. I think that's the most heroic way but the least pragmatic, where a decision is considered to be the right one regardless of the consequences. I'm obsessed with consequences.
Maybe somewhat lying and flattery as well and it relates to my above thoughts. For example, say a girl is in tears thinking she's so unattractive, and at least looking at her and seeing her make-up streaking and face in a mess that I don't think she looks pretty at all at least right now. But I'm okay with lying and flattering here and telling her she's pretty if I think that will cheer her up; if I think it will produce a noble consequence, so to speak. Of course, I will be much more reluctant to tell her that a very ugly haircut looks good, since then she might find out very differently from others, or start favoring that haircut which so ill-suits her face. There I would be reluctant to flatter at all, since it might cause more harm than good.
