Why are there so many more mermaids than mermen in legends?

Here's a theory I came up with: mermaids are humans who have sirenomelia (a conditions with conjoined legs) and a skin condition that causes scale like patches of dead skin to grow on their lower body. Sirenomelia is normally results in infants being still born but the form that mermaids have is most often fatal in males but rarely in females (hence the disparity). There aren't enough mermen so that's why they go for sailors.

Or maybe mermen are just more elusive?

And the reason the kind of sirenomelia merfolk have is more often fatal in males is because of the differences in the way the pelvis is shaped.

sirenomelia has been put forward as a theory in the past and its been noted it often occurs in small coastal villages. But given the universal occurrence of mermaids throughout different cultures I suspect its more to do with sailors spinning tales down the tavern. A description about a beautiful women with wet tits and a tail holds the attention more.

I mean that you a true and I did add the chains bit just because you never see the males. Like do the males just not like humans or something? Or maybe the Maids all have higher sex drives and so that is why they choose to go show off while the males are just like… really?

I’ve always held to the idea that however they get to be what they are or whoever they are they are the least practical sexual image ever invented… like you get fuck a fish… how’s it works with a mermaid? Virtually all mermaid tales were created for or by sailors, who were almost exclusively men for the vast majority of recorded history. That's why.

Which legends? The Little Mermaid says both mermaids and mermen exist. Maybe so men would find mermaids more attractive, due to heterosexuality.

I’ve always thought that it was just that the gene pull didn’t create male counterparts. So maids was all that could be made and then they had to go find their males to turn them… like a weird vampire type thing.
