If you grew up in the `60's, were The Beatles something special to you or just another band?

I liked them a lot but I never rushed out to buy their newest record each time one came out. The only time I did was with the white album but, even with that, I think I was almost a year late! To me, they WERE just another band but, I correctly predicted that I wouldn't need to rush out and buy their stuff NOW because it'd be around for a LONG time and I could always get it all later.
In a way, I also felt the same about psych. It wasn't incredible or anything special, it was just the music we had available, at the time! It wasn't until the 2nd psych wave in the mid `80's that I started to get heavily into it!! Now, I've got thousands of psych records!! Growing up with it, I doubt I had more than a few dozen.

Yeah, the Beatles were, to me, just kind of 'Meh' back in the 60s, and for a long time afterwards.

I came to appreciate some of their work as the years went by.

I consider George Harrison to be the best of the bunch, his collaboration with 'The Traveling Wilbury's' to be, arguably, his greatest contribution to music, but certainly not forgetting 'The Concert for Bangladesh'.

This brings to mind a story - One day in the late 60s my dad came home from work and proclaimed, "They're building a 'G-D' rock and roll station next door to my office!" My dad was a pretty old school kind of guy musically, highly skilled at playing piano and accordion. I was around 10 years old at the time and loved my dad with all my heart. He passed away within a couple of years of his announcement of said radio station.

That station, KSHE-95, my favorite, has gone on to being, I believe, the longest running continuously rock-formatted station in the country.

A couple of years ago, my sister, several years older than myself, revealed that before my dad's passing, he had told her that that he thought that the Beatles were highly talented.

That revelation floored me. I had no idea my dad felt that way about the Beatles.

I wish my dad were still around to be able to discuss music, as well as many other subjects that I'm sure would be of mutual interest to us both.

After a quick search, KSHE seems to be the 2nd longest running rock station in the U. S., coming on the airwaves a couple of months after WEBN in Cincinatti.
I occasionally hear controversy regarding the claim.

It's not that I didn't appreciate them. I liked them a lot but, I just never felt I had to have everything they ever did... at least until the late `80's!. Now, I've got hundreds of hours of JUST their Beatles era stuff and a few hundred more of their solo stuff. I think, the llast time I ever listened to my entire Beatles collection was around 1994! At that point, I started getting more and more of their stuff and decided I'd wait `til I had everything I'd picked up sorted into correct order before I listened to the collection again but, every time I get closer to accomplishing that, I get more stuff to add to it!! `93 was when they started releasing the Anthology and BBC albums!. Then I found a collection of the entire "Get Back" sessions recordings, then, along comes the internet and hundreds more hours of sessions recordings, etc.. I still have dozens of hours of stuff I got from online sources to edit down and add to the collection and the list I've been compiling since the mid `80's!
I miss having someone to talk music with, too!! I've rarely ever had any such person but, my singer knew a lot of obscure music that hardly anyone besides us knew about. My neighbor is also a big record collector but he specializes in R&B from the `50's and `60's. Now that I've been forced to move 4 miles away from him I've only been to his place once in the past 3 years and that was a month ago for about 15:00. I don't think we even got close to his record room!
My singer died 12 years ago (exposure to agent orange in Viet Nam).
A few years ago, when I had money, I bought a copy of The Beatles editions of Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit. So far, I've never found anyone to play them with!! I think the Monopoly box is still sealed!

I sure am! I've got over 60,000 records, now! It'd be over 62,000 had my greedy ex-sisters not forced me out of MY house 3 years ago!! In the move, I lost at least 2000 78's!!

Yeah, I remember you telling me about that.
I've got about 30 shellac 78s and I have 1 vinyl 78 that my Grandpa recorded. I've never heard it.
I keep trying to figure out what turntable to buy that'll play those and my vinyl 45s and 33-1/3s.
I don't think one turntable can do it all.
I have turntables for vinyl 45s and 33-1/3s, but that's it.
My understanding is that I need different cartridges for the shellac and vinyl 78s.
So that's 2 more turntables in addition to what I already have.
I can't find anyone local to digitize them for me, and I don't trust shipping them out, especially my Grandpa's recording.

i had a number of vinyl 78's. Most were promos. A couple were red vinyl.
I'm sure there's a few. Crosley makes them that also play radio cassette and CD but, Crosley's stuff is junk! Technics makes a nice one that plays 33 and 45 but, if you press both speed buttons, it plays 78. 33 + 45 IS 78! Problem is, they're usually about $1000 and that just for used ones!! Supposedly, EVERYBODY wants one!!
Most record players up until the early `80's played 4 of the 5 speeds.
I guess that's true but, dad's stereo could play 78's on the same cartridge as the others. Older record players could do that. Most came with a double needle: one side was for vinyl, the other side was for shellac.
No, if the head comes off easily, you should be able to get a second one that has the shellac cartridge loaded into it and then just change the head depending on what you're playing. Each time should only take about half a minute.
I don't think I'd trust shipping them out, either! Otherwise, I could do it. I recorded a thousand or more to cassette about 45 years ago. Have you tried looking them up online? You might be able to FIND recordings you can DL.

That'd still leave my Grandpa's 78 vinyl recording to deal with.
I saw one hack of building up the motor spindle on a standard 33-1/3 - 45 belt drive turntable with electrical tape until you get 78 RPM. Whether the same stylus would work, I don't know.
