Do you think horror is still a relevant genre?

I've got this idea to write short horror stories based on nursery rhymes kinda like the twilight zone (if anyone's ever watched it). I feel like I have a few different ideas featuring suspense and somewhat fear factors and ghosts/poltergeists, but would it be actually worth it.

Most people I've met who are my age don't like horrors, don't see the appeal, finds them too scary or gory and just don't watch or read them. I've only met two others out of about 100 people apart from my dad and my uncles, who've said they've watched the classics.

I've liked horror since I was little, and I know there's a lot of people who enjoy it too. But the thing is that recently there aren't stories as good as before, so, it's honestly rare when a good innovative story comes out, since now almost everything is the extension of a saga that should have died long ago, a shitty remake, or something almost fully based on an specific old movie but presented as something new, so, yeah, we need better new stories. For example, from the latest films, I think insidious and the conjuring sagas where refreshing in their time. I'd love to read yours! Please share if you ever publish them.

Yeah totally get that I hated the new IT, made the clown look silly rather than scary I have a grudge against that film, as I genuinely thought it might be a great idea to break it down and have more of a suspense route. And watched a copycat of 1408 with a female lead and she couldn't act to save her life (I'm sorry if invisible hands grabbed my ankles and is trying to throw me off a balcony I'll be kicking and screaming bloody murder, she looked at her legs a little scared and that's it).

Totally agree with insidious, have you checked out Oculus I thought that was pretty awesome, and the shining mini series done by king himself, and the sequel doctor sleep if you like the suspense horrors. And a more drama than horror but shares elements, lock and key from netflix.

And I think I will go for it, I think trying for ten stories with long chapters and each chapter being a different rhyme is my go to idea at the moment. Though I'm not sure how good they'll be, but I'm hoping to try and miss the cliches at least.

Yep, I kinda remember Oculus, gonna watch it again since I don't remember almost anything. I don't really watch series, specially the ones in netflix. Gonna give those a try, have you watched the purge series? I found them interesting, I know a page where you can watch them in case you can't find them.

I mean, there's so much stuff already that trying to avoid every cliché might even seem like trying too hard, just my opinion. When a story is special on its own it can be very interesting and catch the attention pretty well, even if it has the cliché of the family moving to a new house that's sold for an amazing price for unknown reasons, or the teen left home alone because their parents are traveling. I'm very interested in reading your stories :D keep us updated, please.

Horror has always been a niche. But why not try it, if you have a great idea?

Of course. Horror is about our primal fears. As long as a new take or twist comes along I'm sure older tropes can get a new paint job and manages to tap into that original fear. It just needs the correct implementation to truly stand out.

If all other genres disappeared, horror would be more than sufficient. Horror and sci-fi are really just skins for other genres to keep themselves relevant. That’s a fact.

Haha lol but what if it's you who's getting scared, I hate eyeball scenes that gives me the cringe. But it's been ages since I've had a good jump scare everything is so predictable now it's almost sad.

Never done it after a horror let me get back to you in a couple of years lol, the only problem with me liking horrors is that I find pure romance films too boring to watch most of the time, despite some family assistance in watching them.
