Macarena by Los Del Río.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/zWaymcVmJ-AThe most influential song and dance of all times. We all know it, know the dance.
I had to pick “Macarena” as an MHO due to its #1/#2 Peak Chart Position in so many countries plus it’s Popularity/Sales Numbers.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macarena
@Jaximus-Lion now I feel so fucking old
@legalboxers 😂 no need. Look at today's kids and their music. It's good to be old now days ☺️
@Jaximus-Lion song originally came out 30 years ago but you are right tho.. lol
Somebody that I used to know
https://www.youtube.com/embed/8UVNT4wvIGY Wow, I was not aware of this song…
en.m.wikipedia.org/.../Somebody_That_I_Used_to_Know
It’s such a good song lol. I love it.
This is the actual winner.
I actually like Walk Off The Earth's version of this much better!
I picked “Somebody That I Used to Know” as an MHO due to its #1 Peak Chart Position in so many (20+) countries plus its Popularity/Sales Numbers; and ALSO because the non-“Somebody That I Used to Know” songs from the Belgian-Australian singer Gotye only charted 3 times (#33, 55, and 82) inside of Belgium & Australia and only charted once outside of Belgium & Australia—and this was #96 in the USA.
en.m.wikipedia.org/.../Somebody_That_I_Used_to_Know

Thanks for the facts!
I think he said somewhere that he never cared to be famous or to chart and just enjoyed making music
Wait actually I might be thinking of Hozier 💀

I selected F -- I selected F -- 99 Luftballons. Was one of my favorite songs. I was 10 when it was released. That said, I agree with @Catharine_N that Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe was a one hit wonder, although her song with Tom Hanks (I Really Like You) was also decent... it was a 3-base hit but not out of the park.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/qV5lzRHrGegI created a one-hit wonder folder, but I don't have much in it yet. I need to add more.
Here are a few.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/20HmSomEHZ0https://www.youtube.com/embed/l3yDLvp9le0https://www.youtube.com/embed/T59hsln7nlchttps://www.youtube.com/embed/AZQxH_8raCIhttps://www.youtube.com/embed/U_JFLb1IItMhttps://www.youtube.com/embed/62XRy-jFCm8https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZCkHanF4v1whttps://www.youtube.com/embed/US9lRkeW-m0https://www.youtube.com/embed/qn-z5pIe5PQhttps://www.youtube.com/embed/OQlByoPdG6chttps://www.youtube.com/embed/tbNlMtqrYS0What is your answer-option selection in this question’s poll?
It's a tough call. Either Eileen, Tainted Love, or 99 Balloons.
I voted Eileen, but it could have been any of those three.
By the way, I'm not familiar with B and C. I'll check them out - I might recognize them if I hear them.
Ok thanks.
OK, I listened to Mickey. I haven't heard it before.
I listened to Ice Ice Baby. I vaguely remember it because they heavily sampled David Bowie.
My last links got Jumbled. It should be
Dirty Water by The Standells
House of the Rising Sun by Frijjid Pick. This might be the best OHW on my list.
Love Hurts by Nazareth - It was HUGE when it came out.
I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) by The Proclaimers
There are many one-hit wonder songs that are more notable than any of those listed.
This song is the epitome of the one-hit wonder and is arguably the most famous one-hit wonder of all time.
"Afternoon Delight" by The Starland Vocal Band. This song was #1 right around the time of the Bicentennial in July 1976 and was on radios all summer long.
The song was so huge and with the group's wholesome image, they got a 6-week TV show on CBS in the summer of 1977 and which included David Letterman.
I love these old videos made long before there was MTV.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/wu1UXCdyNo0https://www.youtube.com/embed/q4b3w6a9cSk Good song, but…
“Afternoon Delight” is NOT “more notable” (did NOT chart higher) than at least 2 songs on this question’s answer-option list…

This song is notable for two other reasons. It propelled them to a Best New Band Grammy over Brothers Johnson, Wild Cherry, and... BOSTON. It also won a Best Vocal Arrangement Grammy over... Bohemian Rhapsody.
On this list, Nena by a hair. One U. S. Top 10 but reached #70 in the UK.
Tony Basil had only one U. S. Top 10, but had another reach #52 in the UK
Soft Cell had only one U. S. Top 10, but six in the UK
Vanilla Ice had two U. S. Top 10 hits
The Archies had two U. S. Top 10 hits, and four Top 40.
Another thing to look at is the sales quantities for the songs.
FYI you could also choose “G - Some other song” in this question’s poll and provide a “write-in vote”…
Did you vote “F - ’99 Luftballoons’ “?
Yes. If I were to vote other, I'd probably choose:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQ4PdCrLggo
"Brandy" by Looking Glass. They had a #33 besides, but no one remembers it.
Of course we could talk about Tony Burrows, who was a one-hit wonder as lead vocalist with five different bands.
"Gimme Dat Ding" by the Pipkins
"My Baby Loves Lovin'" by White Plains
"Love Grows" by Edison Lighthouse
“United We Stand” by Brotherhood Of Man
“Beach Baby” by First Class
Also a sixth if we count #4 in the UK with the Flower Pot Men's “Let’s Go To San Francisco.”
"but no one remembers it."
Anyone my age would remember it. It got a lot of air play.
@liamjhayden
Ok, great.
@WindAtMyBack You remember their #33 Hit?
It was this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XTpWhfXEXc
I misread. I thought you were saying nobody remembers Brandy. I assume you mean Jimmy Loves Mary Ann. I just listened to it, and no I don't remember it. I don't know if I've heard it before.
@WindAtMyBack Yeah, I was born in 1995 and even I know Brandy. I only know the other song because I researched it for this great, great question.
Vanilla Ice should never be a choice on any poll unless “it’s worst act ever”.
Lit - Own worst enemy
I wasn’t aware of this song or group.
Looks like this single did very well on the US Rock (6th) & US Alt (1st) charts and went double platinum.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Own_Worst_Enemy_(song)
Also - I see that:
“On May 27, 2022, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton announced that "My Own Worst Enemy" would become the theme song to their talk radio program…”
The premise of the song is somewhat pervy but the song itself and the performance are extraordinary!
Shocking that he didn’t at least state in the song that his love interest was eighteen (instead of sixteen).
genius.com/Benny-mardones-into-the-night-lyrics
There are other “one-hit wonder” songs that charted higher than this one—the highest that this song charted was only 11 (in the USA).
en.m.wikipedia.org/.../Into_the_Night_(Benny_Mardones_song)
I don't judge the quality of the song by how it charted.
This song is unique in that it entered the Top 20 twice, nearly nine years apart, in September 1980 and July 1989.
How do you know this song?…it came out in 1992, is it a favorite of your parents?
Also, I see you’re a Level 1 — but I can’t see when you joined this site because your profile is private — so you must have joined this site not long ago…welcome to GAG!
Yes, my dad and mom used to dance to it at a country place. But I think it was exactly the type of song you were asking for. And I really like that 99 balloon song. Is she singing in German?
Ok, cool.
Yes it was a good pick.
And yeah, Nena came out w a German version and then also an English one too.
I just Googled and learned it was German. Even though I only speak a few German words, I just think the German version was much better.
Yeah I agree. And I think German version charted higher than the English one, even in the States.
It's the tone of the language. Spanish is like that, also.
Pop this into a YouTube search
The Girl From Ipanema - Frank Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim Concert Collection
I wonder if German & Spanish speaking peoples have the same reaction to songs in their own languages like other non-German/non-Spanish speakers do (sort of how British accents are admired by non-British…well at least by Americans).
I met a woman from New Zealand. She said she loved my accent! What the fuck? I'm American, we don't have accents, THEY do. But I live in the Northwest, and she said we have a "sing-song" accent.
Well, that sounded OK, so I released her from my headlock. I let her live. So who knows. Maybe the grass is always greener. But her German version was so awesome. You should Google this Thai tune...
มาทำไม - เบิร์ด ธงไชย, จินตหรา พูนลาภ
Just copy and paste it. It's a duet with Bird Tong Chai and Jintara.
Lol.
Maybe.
Interesting song…wonder what they’re singing to each other…how did you become aware of that song?
Bird (the guy) is asking Jintara why she left him. Next time you're in Thailand, go to one of the zillion Discoteques and you'll smile when you recognize this song. Bird and this song are very famous in Thailand. Bird is actually gay, but the fans love him.
I was at an outdoor bar in Thailand (most all of them are) and the band was taking requests. I wrote my request on a piece of paper, handed it to the guys, and put around five US bucks in the jar.
Holy sheep shit. These guys nailed it. I wanted them to play Thunderstruck by AC/DC.
They rocked the house. Dancing and any indoor activity is nice, but you can do that at home. I wanted the Thai experience, and that meant sweating like a hog. lol It was worth it. I learned that being really hot sucks, but thinking about it just makes it worse. Yes, you're hot, and yes you're drenched in sweat. Who gives a shit. Just go with it.
Ok on what they’re singing.
“Next time [I’m] in Thailand,” huh? Ok—that’ll be my FIRST time.
And “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC…are your parents rockers too?
I march to the beat of my own drummer. I love Mozart and AC/DC.
I love Bluegrass music.
Pop this into your YouTube search. "Iron Horse" is the best of the best.

Much like YOU, we all like what we like. I hate watching sports, and I don't pretend to like sports.
I don't give a hot steaming pile of shit what others think about me. I hate TV, but love my VR headset. It allows me to leave this reality, and enter a better one. There's no way in fuck I'd vacation in America. I love my country, but talking to Americans can happen at home. If I can ever afford another vacation, it will be in a different country. Someone asked about going on a cruise ship. Nope. Leave me out. I would be bored just walking up the plank.
In Thailand, I was able to help teach basic English to handicapped kids for two days. It was the pinnacle of my life.
It’s very cool that “you do you.”
What made you say “Much like YOU, we all like what we like”?
That was just a reflex. People like to pass judgement on others. I'm not saying you do that, but you know what I mean. A guy once asked me if I wanted to come over and see his extensive tarantula collection. I kept on my poker face, and just said I'd love to, but it's getting late. I needed to go.
Does that make me a tarantula racist?
If I ever run for the presidency, will this come back to bite me? (pun intended)
Will my opponents throw this in my face? I like puppies, because they don't have fangs.
Ok, no problem.
You talking about getting bitten made me think of this…

Rock on @avacodotoast!
? Eight Top 10's on the Country Charts.
@LiamJHayden
I see that that is true, “[Billy Rae] Cyrus has scored a total of eight top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Ray_Cyrus
Also:
- The rapper little Nas / featuring Billy Rae Cyrus 2019 remix of “Old Town Road" “rose to number one on the Billboard Hot 100…giving Cyrus his first number one song on the Hot 100.”
So:
Although most people (especially those not following country music) know of Billy Rae Cyrus because of his "Achy Breaky Heart” single — or maybe because of his daughter as a singer and/or because of the show “Hannah Montana” — he’s not really a “one-hit wonder” artist.
It is this.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/i_i7PKdQJU4Are you & @nikki1989 GAG friends?
Ok. She & you picked the same song, which was not on my poll answer-option list.
Well a lot of those weren't one-hit wonders if you count the UK charts. But I digress. Her is my nomination:
https://www.youtube.com/embed/u1ZoHfJZACA FYI: I am in the USA and what shows on my side is this…
“Video unavailable
The uploader has not made this video available in your country”
What is the song name?
Wonderful Life by Black.
My favorite one hit wonder song is probably “Jenny (867-5309)” by Tommy Tutone.
Great song!
These were great songs. Tainted Love is my favorite on this list.
Yeah. It’s a difficult list to choose from for me…
I acknowledge that “Mickey” was huge, but I’m torn by “Tainted Love” and “99 Luftballoons.”
It's so much fun to sing along to Come On Eileen. These are tough choices indeed!
For sure!
There are a number of great songs on the following list…
www.insider.com/best-one-hit-wonders-2018-5
…including the “one-hit wonder” singalong song “867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone (1981).
(Note: The above link says that Tommy Tutone’s “Angel Say No" reached #38 in the US in 1980…but who cares, right? Lol)

@trueconfection
@snowedin
I picked my 2 MHOs on this question from a Peak Chart Position/Sales/“lack of success of other songs ‘numbers’ perspective” — and I would have chosen “Mickey” as my third pick on that basis (Tony Basil’s non-“Mickey” songs had NO success in continental Europe but Nena’s non-“99 Luftballoons” songs received 23 Top 20s there), but…
My 2 PERSONAL FAV one-hit wonders are “Tainted Love” & “99 Luftballoons.”
@SnowedIn
You’re welcome.
It sucks that a Question Asker (QA) isn’t able to (at least have the opportunity to) pick 2 Blue MHOs & 2 Pink MHOs on their question.
As it is now, a QA has the opportunity to choose only 2 MHOs and then the system will “automatically select opinions until 2 MHO's per gender are selected in total.”
https://www.girlsaskguys.com/faq/posts#127
* Correct FAQ for the quoted text above…
https://www.girlsaskguys.com/faq/posts#179
@gagname No worries! I just give my opinion (s) and sometimes I get lucky with the mho. It's almost painful to pick one.
@trueconfection
Ok. I understand.
It irritates me that Question Askers (QAs) don’t get the opportunity to select the 3rd & 4th MHOs for their questions; I bet some QAs are lazy and don’t pick MHOs for their questions, this is when I think the system “automatically select[ing] opinions until 2 MHO's per gender are selected in total” should be enacted.
This amazing band had only one Billboard hit, and it went to #1. They were around for from 1967 to 1980 officially. My parents turned me on to them.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/LPvAgQaKpCw CAN’T consider Yes a “one-hit wonder” group…
Yes “received five Grammy nominations between 1985 and 1992 [and] In April 2017, Yes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yes_(band)
True, but that was their only "hit". But ok, in that case, I'm going with "I Touch Myself" by the DiVinyls.
Per the “Singles” section of the following article…
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yes_discography
Yes has had 6 US Top 40 hits & 4 Top 40 UK hits, as well as 15 US Rock Top 40 hits.
My bad, I meant it was their only #1 song. Moving on.
Yes is tricky, because like most Progressive Rock bands their albums were what sold, generally not singles. Still they have had seven Top 10 albums and six Top 40 hits
https://billboard.elpee.jp/artist/Yes
Sugarloaf - Green Eyed Lady
I chose F out of those, I remember 99 red balloons when it came out back in 84, I have the CD and that song is actually pretty good in German too
I prefer the German version.
Regarding the versions…
“ “99 Luftballons" (German: Neunundneunzig Luftballons, "99 balloons") is a song [with an] English-language version titled "99 Red Balloons"... The English version is not a direct translation of the German original and contains lyrics with a somewhat different meaning. In the US, the English-language version did not chart, while the German-language recording became Nena's only US hit.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/99_Luftballons
That’s surprising because I only heard the English version on the radio back in the 80s and only discovered the German version on the cd and liked it
Also saw most of those songs you posted on MTV in the 80s so I remember what the music videos looked like from back then, back when MTV was really a music, television video station
I lost this question while I was searching for a video I’m lucky to find it. I had to do some research. It was on the top here. Try this one on for size.
I think that the song "Rapper's Delight" would be the correct one-hit wonder song — instead of “Apache (Jump On It)” — for group The Sugarhill Gang…
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sugarhill_Gang
This was a cool song by "ah" back in the early 80's. I have never heard any other decent song from these people again.
Sugar Sugar wasn't a one hit wonder as they had another called Jingle Jangle.

Catchy tune.
Hey, I see you just joined this site 2 days ago — welcome to GAG!
I guess Carly Rae Jepsen has also had another top ten hit…
“Good Time” - #8
https://www.billboard.com/artist/carly-rae-jepsen/
…however, per UPDATE 2 on this question, I suppose “Call Me Maybe” “overshadows [her] other work.”
Oh yeah I guess she did have another song. Maybe I can change my answer to that hooked on a feeling song lol
Ok. You mean the Blue Swede cover version of “Hooked on a Feeling” — from the album also named Hooked on a Feeling — which went to #1 on the US charts,” right?…
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooked_on_a_Feeling
Blue Swede also had the #7 US hit "Never My Love" from that same album — see the “Discography” section “Singles” portion of the following link…
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Swede
…however I bet most people are really only aware of the “Hooked on a Feeling” song.
That's the only song I know because of guardians of the galaxy lol
👌👍
Mmmbop Hanson, suprised nobody mentioned it big hit in the mid 90s
“MMMBop” certainly overshadows Hanson’s other work and is their “signature song”; but other Hanson songs charted in the top 20 twice in the USA and 5 times in the UK, making “MMMBop” NOT a “one-hit wonder.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanson_discography
@brokenheartedx
FYI our conversation inspired me to post the following question…
What is the most iconic “signature song”? ↗
Don Mclean. American Pie
Don McLean had 2 other top 20 hits besides “American Pie”…
“Crying” - #5
“Vincent” - #12
www.billboard.com/.../
…however, per UPDATE 2 on this question, “American Pie” certainly “overshadows [his] other work.”
"Eye of the tiger" it went 8x platinum.
That’s a great song, but the group that put that out — Survivor — had other hits too…
“ “Burning Heart" (US number 2), "The Search Is Over" (US number 4), "High on You" (US number 8), "Is This Love" (US number 9), and "I Can't Hold Back" (US number 13).”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivor_(band)
* “High on You" (US number 8)
Oh man, tough choices!
Can you narrow it down to one song, or two?
I chose "Hey Mickey".
Ok, that’s a great one.
I think from your list sugar sugar.
I agree with "Mickey".
