Should I write a novel or a screenplay?

I know novels take awhile to write and screenplays are like 100 and something pages, so there's a big difference, but i haven't written either in the past. I just woke up one day from a great dream and started writing. i've written 21 pages in 3 days and i'm not even close to revealing where i'm going. so i could write a novel, novelette or make it a screenplay to fast forward to the good bits.

i'm so sick of the crap in movies nowadays and think my book would make a great movie also. any writers out there with any advice on this?

I just passed the 51 book page mark in my project. Too long for a screenplay and too short for a novel, but I still have a lot of writing left to do in the story.

One of my wife's friends wrote the screenplay for US Marshals. He got rich on it.
But the problem is, you have to know people in the industry, be part of the system, and have a reputation before anyone will even look at your screenplay.
He had been editing screenplays for the studio for years and teaching screenplay writing. So he knew people and was already held in high regard.
It's a tough biz to break into.

I think it's much easier to get a good novel published.

thank you for your feedback. i thought as well it's worth publishing the novel and then see how that plays out. I have a friend who took screenwriting classes but she never did anything with them. i do have a friend who's an actor. he's not brad pitt but he's been in some significant movies. not sure it would help because it doesn't have a role for him.

maybe i'll write it and publish it and see where it goes. i have a friend who's edited a couple of books and she's brilliant! so she knows how to get a book published and is working on publishing one of her dad's currently.

i know it's a big jump to the big screen. do you think an agent would help?

I think an agent would be essential.

Get an agent once you're done. They can help you get it made into a Netflix movie or Hulu or whatever. If you don't know what you're doing and you just woke up and said imma do this. Go for it but get in contact with Peggy McColl. She is an author and helps other authors (any level) with the process of what to do after you write the book.
